I hope you can help last night - newdotnet6_98.dll - decided to download itself on my machine, I managed to do an emergency block on my connection with Trend Micro PC-Cillin before it fully downloaded but my browser (IE 6) is playing up and every time I boot my machine up I get a dialog box telling me that due to significant hardware changes I need to re-activate Windows within 3 days which sound dodgy to me??? I have deleted - newdotnet - for Add/Remove programs and I have run Spybot S&D and AD-Aware SE, I have also downloaded Hijack This and created a log, these are the results -

Welcome to the forum. Sorry you've had to wait so long, but we've been real busy.

Scan with Hijack This and put a checkmark next to the following entries:
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

Close all windows and browsers and click "fix checked"

Next, download CleanUp 4.0 . Install and run it. Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
Empty Recycle Bins
Delete Cookies
Delete Prefetch files
Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.
Download the trial version of Spy Sweeper from Here

Install it using the Standard Install option. (You will be asked for your e-mail address, it is safe to give it. If you receive alerts from your firewall, allow all activities for Spy Sweeper)

You will be prompted to check for updated definitions, please do so.
(This may take several minutes)

When Spy Sweeper has updated, reboot to safe mode.

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.

Open Spy Sweeper and click on Sweep and allow it to fully scan your system.

When the sweep has finished, click Remove to remove any items found. Save the log.

Exit Spy Sweeper.

Reboot to normal mode and post the results from Spy Sweeper along with a new Hijack This log.

Your log showed no signs of infection, and Spy Sweeper confirmed that. A word of caution about NewDotNet, if it is not removed correctly, you can lose your internet connection. Removing it through add/remove programs is the best way.

Are you having any other problems?

Sorry for the late reply. I think the newDotNet problem is gone  I do how ever have two other problems -

1. (Not Serious) For some reason my PC randomly tries to access the floppy drive and even though there is no disk in there nothing happens...

2. (Serious) My PC keeps re-booting randomly, there is no shutdown screen it just cuts out and then reboots with no error screen, I have disabled the automatic 're-boot after system failure' box but I still dont get a system stop code. Also when I run 'eventvwr.msc' the log shows issues with 'userenv' and 'cpqaolan.dll'. I am running UPHClean at the moment to unload my profile at shutdown to see if it will solve one of those issues and will let you know.

With the re-booting issue I have noticed that it almost always re-boots when I play a game (Civilization iv) but only when I try to LOAD a saved game and works fine when I start a new game. I do not think it is the game itself as it used to re-boot well before I installed the game. I've noticed that Windows Explorer encounters errors all the time and needs to shut down, maybe I'm wrong but I get the feeling something might be wrong there???

Thanks Viccy...

Your log doesn't show any problems, and spy sweeper confirms it.

As far as your computer randomly looking for your floppy, if you have recently saved something to a floppy, it still looks for it. If you know what you last saved to floppy, you can load the file and then save to your hard drive, and it should quit seeking the floppy.

For the rebooting problem, this is often a sign of your computer overheating, which is more likely to happen when playing games that require a lot of resources. Be sure your fans are clean and running properly.

I've never used the floppy on this machine...

I dont think its an overheating problem as I usually try to play games straight after boot up. I have noticed a quite beep from within the machine a split second before it shuts down as if someone has just pressed the reset button. Could something connected to gaming be making the reset button activate if that makes any sense?????

I want to blow away the HD and reinstall windows but when I tried to install Windows on a different HD, Microsoft warned me that I have exceeded the number of times that I can reinstall which I didn't know was possible. I thought once you bought your Win CD you could reinstall as much as you needed. I just cant win with this...

Thanks

You can contact Microsoft and explain what you are doing, and see if they have any suggestions.
