I have Windows XP Professional.
I recently had a virus. I used a combination of spybot / adaware / malaware / microsoft malicious software tool remove and i seem to have been able to remove the infection.

However, my desktop (start menu and icons) is gone. I can access the web using task manager and the computer is functioning fine. I just lost the desktop.

I really don't want to start from scratch and lose all the software i have downloaded over the years.
System restore will only go back a day or two. I thought i would be able to go back to last month but it won't.

I started up in safe mode but the desktop is gone there too.

Can anyone assist with this issue.
