Hello, I'm hoping you guys might have some suggestions... I've run out of options on my own!

system:
- dell latitude d620
- os: xp professional
- browser: mozilla firefox 3.6.8
- anti-virus: symantec endpoint

history:
- symantec (does a full system scan 5 days a week) picked up a rootkit virus a few weeks ago. Claimed to have deleted it, yet picked one up every scan. I re-ran the scan in safemode, then deleted offending files from the registry. The rootkit problem seemed to have been solved.
- The next day, a trojan was picked up (or several, rather). Can't seem to fully get rid of them. Can't find any offending files in the registry.
- Started having trouble with google re-direct virus... keep getting redirected to advertisiting sites after the browser flashes "redirect5.google"
- on startup, keep getting different error messages... "invalid image" for different files.
- Computer began to run slower
- Tonight, I am no longer being redirected, but numerous sites have stopped working (aol, facebook, gmail, etc... basically any site with radioboxes to click on)

- Nothing is being picked up by symantec
- I ran malwarebytes software, found several trojans (trojan.fakealert, Rogue.AntivirusSuite.Gen, and trojan.DNSchanger).
- I also ran ad-aware, nothing picked up.

- everything is backed up on the system
- the CD emulation software on the computer is turned off
- a DDS log was created, as was a GMER log

If there are any suggestions you can make, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
** there is no option to attach a file... should I just paste the required file into a seperate message?

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Thanks so much for the response (I really appreciate the help!).

So, briefly, the issue at hand is:

1. Browser redirect: any google search in IE or firefox will redirect me
2. slow system: system has slowed down considerably since this issue started
3. login issues: most sites that require a login will either not load properly, or not allow me to login (eg aol, gmail, facebook, etc.)
4. error message on start up: "runDLL" error with C://WINDOWS\sdipbap.dll
5. unresponsive scripts: Script: file:///C:/Program%20Files/Mozilla%20Firefox/components/nsBlocklistService.js:648

In an attempt to fix the problem, I ran my antivirus software in safe mode, as well as running adaware and malwarebytes (also in safe mode). Symantec and malwarebytes picked up issues the first time they were run, but none are piciking up anything further.

So, as requested, I re-ran the DDS and GMER with the AV turned off, and CD emulation off as well.

The DDS is posted below.

Hello marko7,
  • Welcome to Bleeping Computer.
  • My name is fireman4it and I will be helping you with your Malware problem.

Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:
  • Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools.
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing.
  • Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean".
  • Finally, please reply using the button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply, unless they do not fit into the post.
  • I will be analyzing your log. I will get back to you with instructions.

Hello,

Sorry for the delay in getting back with you. Lets start cleaning your machine.

1.
Install Recovery Console and Run ComboFix

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Close any open windows, including this one.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Note:The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you
should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.
  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running.
ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may cause it to stall.

Things to include in your next reply::
Combofix.txt
How is your machine running now?

Ok-

so far, the redirect issue seems to have been corrected! The computer is still a bit more sluggish than normal, but better than it was. I am still getting error messages (they are different each time; the last one to pop up was: "GrooveMonitor.exe - Bad Image" "the application of DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntshrui.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette." The general message is the same each time, the exception being the exe file, and the link listed in the body of the message. I've attached the combofix file; the program did not restart my computer upon completion.

Thanks for all the help!

Hello,

Glad to see the redirects are gone.
Lets see if we can get your machine running better.

1.
Spybot S&D or Ad-Aware are no longer recommended
  • mvps.org is no longer recommending Spybot S&D or Ad-Aware due to poor testing results. See here - (scroll down and read under Freeware Antispyware Products)
  • Further, most people don't understand Spybot's TeaTimer or how to use it and that feature can cause more problems than it's worth. TeaTimer monitors changes to certain critical keys in Windows registry but does not indicate if the change is normal or a modification made by a malware infection. The user must have an understanding of the registry and how TeaTimer works in order to make informed decisions to allow or deny the detected changes. Additionally, TeaTimer may conflict with other security tools which do a much better job of protecting your computer and even prevent disinfection of malware by those tools.
  • More effective alternatives are Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware Free.

2.
We need to check your hard disk for errors.

To check the volume for errors:
  • Click start and then My Computer.
  • Right click the drive C and select Properties.
  • Under Tools tab press Check Now...
  • Put a check mark in both items and press start.
  • If you get a message click Yes to schedule the disk check and click OK and then restart your computer to start the disk check. Please be patient and let the system run. In some cases it might take a couple of hours and you don't have to sit there the whole time.
*NOTE: This scan could take along time to complete, but let it finish.

3.
We need to run a CFScript.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

CODE
File::
c:\windows\Qkumogaxeyuvasa.dat
c:\windows\Wfiqu.bin

Domains::

DDS::
uStart Page = hxxp://www.mystart.com?pr=oovoo2_2

Driver::
rpcld

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

4.
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (v1.44) and save it to your desktop.MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Guide.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

5.
Revealin hidden files

Please set your system to show all files.
Click Start, open My Computer, select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.

Please see if you have the following file C:\Windows\I386.

Things to include in your next reply::
Combofix.txt
MBAM log
Do you have a WindowsXP Disk?
Is C:\Windows\I386 there

Okay-

-So I scanned to check the hard disk for errors; there were no errors detected.
- the combofix log is included in the body of the post, as is the MBAM log (there was no option to "show results" after running the scan)
- C:\Windows\I386 is not present on the system
- My computer unfortunately did not come with a Windows XP installation disk.

Hello,

Things are looking good. Lets update some stuff and get on last DDS log

1.
Your version of Adobe Reader is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Adobe components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Adobe Reader Version 9.3. and save it to your desktop.
  • Uncheck the "Free McAfee Security plan Plus" option or any other Toolbar you are offered
  • Click the download button at the bottom.
  • If you use Internet Explorer and do not wish to install the ActiveX element, simply click on the click here to download link on the next page.
  • Remove all older version of Adobe Reader: Go to Add/remove and uninstall all versions of Adobe Reader, Acrobat Reader and Adobe Acrobat.
If you are unsure of how to use Add or Remove Programs, the please see this tutorial:How To Remove An Installed Program From Your Computer
  • Then from your desktop double-click on Adobe Reader to install the newest version.
If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the "Adobe Setup - Welcome" window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
  • Once the installation is finished, go here: Adobe Update Page and scroll down to UPDATES/PROGRAMS. From there download: Adobe Reader 9.3.2 update - multiple languages and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click the file AdbeRdrUpd932_all_incr.msp on your desktop to start installing the update and follow the prompts.
  • Once the update is done click Exit.
Your Adobe Reader is now up to date!

2.
Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "JDK 6 Update 20 (JDK or JRE)".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u20-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
  • If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
-- Starting with Java 6u10, the uninstaller incorporated in each new release uses Enhanced Auto update to automatically remove the previous version when updating to a later update release. It will not remove older versions, so they will need to be removed manually.
-- Java is updated frequently. If you want to be automatically notified of future updates, just turn on the Java Automatic Update feature and you will not have to remember to update when Java releases a new version.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

3.
Your Microsoft Windows installation is out of date.
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch for it. After the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC, so keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC
Go here to check for & install updates to Microsoft applications.
Note: The update process uses ActiveX, so you will need to use Internet Explorer for it, and allow the ActiveX control that it wants to install.

Please reboot and repeat the update process until there are no more updates to install.

Things to include in your next reply::
DDS log
Don't need the Attach.txt this time.
How is your machine running now?

Okay- things seem to be running smoother. Still receiving messages stating "cscript.exe error", and "GrooveMonitor.exe - Bad Image". System is no longer redirecting, and is running faster. I attempted to update Windows, but no new updates were found.

Hello,

Lets try this and see if this helps.

1.
To reconfigure script debugging options and Disable Machine Debug Manager:
  • Click on Start > Run and type: iexplore.exe.
  • On the Tools menu, click Internet Options > Advanced tab.
  • Click the "Advanced tab" and scroll down to "Browsing".
  • Put a check mark next to "Disable Script Debugging (IE)".
  • Put a check mark next to "Disable Script Debugging (Other)".
  • Uncheck "Display a notification about every script error".
  • Click "b]OK[/b]" and close Internet Explorer.

    To disable the service:

  • Click on Start > Run and type: services.msc
  • Press OK.
  • Click the "Extended tab" at the bottom to view all the info on your services.
  • Scroll down the list and find the service called Machine Debug Manager.
  • When you find the service, double-click on it or right-click and choose "Properties".
  • In the Properties Window > General Tab that opens, click the "Stop" button.
  • From the drop-down menu next to "Startup Type", click on "Disabled".
  • Click Apply, then OK and close any open windows.

Screenshot with an example of how to do this if needed.

2.
Backup Your Registry with ERUNT
  • Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it.
    http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
  • For version with the Installer:
Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
  • For the zipped version:
Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

3.
We need to run a reg file

1. Copy the following into a notepad (Start>Run>"notepad"). Do not copy the word "code".
CODE
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"GrooveMonitor"=-

2. Click File, then Save As... .
3. Click Desktop on the left.
4. Under the Save as type dropdown, select All Files.
5. In the box File Name, input fix.reg
6. Hit Ok.
7. Double click fix.reg. A message box will pop up asking whether you want to merge the file with the registry. Click "yes". Once complete, click "ok"

4.
Please copy the contents of the code box below, open notepad and paste it there. On the top toolbar in notepad select file, then save as. In the box that opens type in remservice.bat for the file name. Right below that click the down arrow in the line for "save as" and select all files. Save this to your desktop and close notepad.

CODE
@echo off
sc stop  rpcld
sc delete  rpcld
del remservice.bat
EXIT

Locate the remservice icon on your desktop and double click it. A box will pop up briefly on your screen and disappear, this is normal.

Okay- here we go.

The system is running much better, but still having some 'bad image' errors popping up. The machine debug manager was already turned off, and I followed the rest of your instructions. I got a new error message: is-9CJ7K.tmp - bad image "DLL C:\WINDOWS\System32\ntshrui.dll", and one of the previous messages: cscript.exe - bad image"DLL C:\WINDOWS\System32\ntshrui.dll" when I re-run the DDS. Other than that, the speed of the computer is improved and no further issues.

Hello,

As I suspected your C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntshrui.dll has become corrupted we will now replace it with another copy from your machine.

1.
We need to run a CFScript.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

CODE
FCopy::
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\ntshrui.dll | C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntshrui.dll

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

2.
Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2
  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    CODE
    filefind
    *ntshrui.dll*

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.

Things to include in your next reply::
    Combofix.txt
    Systemlook.txt
    A new DDS log
No need for Attach.txt this time.
How is your machine running now? Still getting Bad image error?
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt
