This is on a computer I do not use, so I don't know the exact time frames or if any malicious or compromised sites were visited. All I know is that about 2 months ago, this computer was infected with "AV Security Suite." I ran "MalwareBytes" and removed it, allowing the user to access the internet once again.

But recently, the computer has been having problems with the internet. The browser in question is Firefox. I know that it has been slow and sluggish and crashing often. When I tried to download CCleaner by searching for it in Google, I found that the page would either not load after a wait of about 20 seconds, or would redirect me to a completely unrelated page. On one instance, it redirected me to a fake "My Computer" saying the computer was infected with spyware and trojans. I then tried other search engines like Bing.com, only to find the same problem. It would redirect me to an unrelated site, usually some insurance sites, but otherwise random redirects.

Since then, I have run MalwareBytes twice, one time finding 3 malware infections, the second time none. I had to restart after the first scan so it could remove the malware. Then I ran Hitman Pro 3.5 and only found tracking cookies and "explorer.exe" in C:\Windows\ that said it might be a Trojan. I tried to remove it to see what would happen and it told me to put in my Windows XP disc, which I didn't have on hand, so I left it. Then I ran Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition, no results.

As of now, Firefox starts up quickly whereas before I ran MalwareBytes it was slow to start. However, the redirects are still happening. So that was when I created an account here and decided to post a topic. I would like to stop the redirects and I am wondering if there are any other problems or any "remnants" of something like AV Security Suite I missed the first time around. If it's necessary information, no sensitive website information (bank accounts, financial info, etc.) has been on this computer in the past 3 months except for email and Facebook. I had the user change passwords to everything on a separate computer to be safe. I would really appreciate any help with this problem. I ran DeFogger, DDS, and GMER. Here are the necessary logs:

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.
  1. Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  2. Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  3. Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  4. Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  5. Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

There was one problem I ran into. After running ComboFix, the computer restarted itself and booted into Windows XP Professional. I left the computer for about 2 minutes and did not see the Windows XP "splash page" with the loading bar before I left. I returned to find a blue screen that said this:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status o
f 0xc0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system has been shut down.

Because I was not at the computer at the exact moment this happened, I'm afraid I'm unable to say when during the boot process the blue screen occurred. I did a manual reboot using the laptop power button and this time it booted normally to the desktop, allowing ComboFix to finish and create a log report.

As of now, the Google redirect is still affecting most search results. I didn't try many searches, but I know those that direct to bleepingcomputer.com are not affected.

The laptop I'm working on is XP Professional, so I do not have a Windows Vista DVD. Nor do I have the original XP recovery disc (if it came with one).

Do I redo the steps starting from the notepad for the copy.bat file, or do I just go straight to the recovery console? And when I'm in the recovery console, do I start with

cd C:\WINDOWS

and then do these steps?

cd c:\windows\system32
ren winlogon.exe[SPACE]winlogon.old
copy c:\winlogon.exe[SPACE]c:\windows\system32
exit
