Hey everyone. I'm a newbie to this site and have already found it very helpful. However, I have encountered a new problem that is giving me a lot of grief. My Compaq Presario 2500 Laptop isn't loading windows XP. It has recently been under strain with viruses and spyware and i have taken the actions described on this site to deal with these, however it would still sporradically freeze for no reason. On one such occasion, it froze while on the default windows XP screensaver that comes up on the select user screen. Now, whenever i try to load windows everything is fine until the select user screen, at which point the frozen image of the screensaver comes up (blue screen with XP icon). I have tried starting windows in safe mode and have experimented with settings but to no avail. I always end up with that frozen screen. I have no clue what i should do :-S. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance, Jack.

Could be that the laptop is not completely free of viruses or spyware. Can you take the hard drive out and hook it up to another system (desktop) that is up-to-date with its spyware and virus signatures and re scan the laptop hard drive there?

Otherwise you might have to do a WinXP repair.

Have you try a restore point, from System Restore?

Thanks guys

I can't get windows started so can't use a restore point. I'm reluctant to hook the hard-drive up to another computer for warranty reasons.

How do I do a WinXP repair? Or should I reinstall Windows? Will this result in me losing my data (mainly mp3 files for iTUnes)?

You guys are great....

Jack

If you do a windows repair it is better to skip the repair console, the first option, just say no. At the next screen you will get a prompt to reinstall windows or repair. Choose repair at that point.
