I've been working on this system for several days now with no luck. Clicking on a link from something like a google search will sometimes open a new browser to an ad site or redirect the current browser to an ad site. MSSE runs but can't do updates, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware runs and doesn't find any more problems, Windows update fails with an 0x80772EFE error. Here's the Defogger log:

I'll attach the Attach.txt.

GMER runs all the way through (takes several hours to complete) but locks the keyboard and mouse when I click on the 'Save' button. I tried this twice, once with the normal filename and once with a random filename with the same results. :-(

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer! welcome.gif

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

I was able to do an update to MSSE via the automated updates function of Windows by using MSConfig to boot up in diagnostic mode, then leaving the system idle overnight when last Tuesday's updates came through. A scan with the latest updates allowed me to clear enough off the system to let Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to do it's update and then three or four scans later everything was coming through clean. I left MSSE installed, removed the rest of the utilities, and gave the system back to her. She's happy to be able to browse without the popups and should somewhat more secure with a virus checker newer than the expired Norton 2005 she was running.

BTW, I was never able to get a GMER report, whenever GMER finished it's scan it killed the USB hubs and the keyboard and mouse would no longer work. I didn't have a PS2 keyboard or mouse sitting around, so I was unable to save the scan. It'd be better if GMER automatically saved a report after scanning, perhaps if several minutes passes without a manual save...

Hello.

There is evidence of malware in your original logs. I see that you have run ComboFix.

Please post the contents of
C:\ComboFix.txt

After, please delete your copy of ComboFix and download a new one.

Download and Run ComboFix
Download Combofix by sUBs from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.
Link 1, Link 2
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe and follow the prompts. If you are using Windows Vista, right click the icon and select "Run as Administrator". You will not recieve the prompts below if you are not using Windows XP. ComboFix will check to see if you have the Windows Recovery Console installed.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.

  • When the Recovery Console has been installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.

Download and Run Scan with RootRepeal
Let's try this instead of GMER.
  • Open RootRepeal.exe on your desktop. If you are using Windows Vista, right click RootRepeal.exe and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Report tab.
  • Click the Scan button.
  • Check all seven boxes.
  • Push Ok
  • Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:), and press Ok.
  • Allow RootRepeal to run a scan of your system. This may take some time.
  • Once the scan completes, push the button. Save the log to your desktop, using a distinctive name, such as RootRepeal.txt. Include this report in your next reply, please.
