All,

Yesterday, I successfully got rid of the Security Suite mallware infection, thanks to the help of bleepingcomputer.com clapping.gif . After that was done, I noticed I had to reconfigure my internet access as it would not connect to the internet. Having done so, I wanted to look for information about virus scanners. Using Google, I noticed that every search result was redirected to an ambiguous site. Typing the address in the IE address bar does work fine. Doing so, I accessed the Microsoft site to have Windows updated. Unfortunately the updater only keeps searching but does not finish the search.

Don't know if it is relatated but I don't seem to be able to access Windows in the Safe Mode using F8 anymore. If the system does get me to the selection page the arrow keys don't seem to work, so I can only wait for Windows to start normally.(I was able to work in safe mode to remove Security Suite).

Use of proxy server is still unchecked in LAN-settings of IE.

When browsing the internet, without using Google, I do start receiving pop-ups from ambiguous sites.

Please advise.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer! welcome.gif

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Dear Elle,

Thanks for looking into this. Unfortunately, I've not been able to resolve the problem last week. Every day I scanned my computer using Avira and Mallware bytes, but without success. Instead, since a few days ago I get an Avira warning every 10 seconds (annoying bleep), but no pop up telling me what it is (I know it's Avira, because when I shut down Avira Guard to perform the DDS scan, the warnings stopped).
Yesterday I also noticed that the Avira virus scanner stalled when performing the full scan.

Please note that I still have use of proxy server disabled (when enabled, I can't get access to internet)

This is in adition to the previously decribed problems (Google redirect, pop-ups, unable to start in safe mode, Microsoft update not giving search results).

Below you'll find the DDS scan I made today and attached are the GMER and Attach.

Please advise.

Hello! smile.gif

I am Blind Faith or Elle(it's easier to remember,I think) and I will help you with your malware related problems.
As you can see I am still a trainee and that means my work is revised by a coach.
Therefore, it will take a bit longer for me to reply.
So don't be impatient because I won't leave your case suspended in the air, waiting forever.

NOTE: Do not make any type of changes to your system during the cleaning process. The steps you are following are based on strict information from your system. So changes which I did not give instructions for are not recommended.

I will need some time to research the files on your system so please click the Options button at the top bar of this topic and Track this Topic, where you should choose email notifications to know when I replied.

During the cleaning process many files may be hidden so please unhide them by following the instructions listed here: How to show hidden files and folders.

Remember to check your topic for new replies.

Probably, it will take a couple of days until the next reply but after that everything will go faster.

Also please let me know if you still need help after you have read this.

Hello,

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

Hello Elle,

I think the best course of action is to re-install.

Thanks for looking into this.

Good morning Elle,

Yesterday, I made a back-up of all files I wanted to keep. After that I tried to re-boot from Windows CD, but keyboard input doesn't work during startup, even though I can access the BIOS. As I have to press any key to re-boot from CD, this didn't work. My thought was that this was due to virusses. Therefor, I scanned the computer for virusses with Avira and found 6 virusses including a Rootkit. Having put the files in quarantine, I restarted the computer to see if this had done the trick. Unfortunately, not only doesn't the computer respond to keyboard input when I have to press any key to have the computer re-boot from windows CD, but also the computer doesn't seem to be able to boot at all. I'm getting as far as the windows status bar, after that I get a black screen and the computer re-boots.

I do still have access to the BIOS, but even if I set the boot sequence to all CDrom, I still have to confirm that I want to reboot from CD during the start-up but I can't give the confirmation. After 5 seconds the computer boots from harddisk, even though I set the BIOS to only boot from CDrom.

At this point, I only want to format my hard disk to be able to do a clean re-install. Any suggestions how I can still make that happen?

Please advise.

Hello,

I guess you have a USB keyboard (with a rectangular connector). USB keyboards tend to have such problems in a DOS environment if the option USB Legacy Support is not set on Enabled from the BIOS setup (integrated peripherals). However, I do not recommend it to be set on Enabled due to the shut down problems it might cause.

The best option at the moment is switching to a PS/2 keyboard (with a round connector) during the installation process, not actually buy one, but if you can, borrow one and use that one. After the installation process is done, you can switch back to your USB keyboard.
It is possible to use the USB keyboard even though the PS/2 one is less complicated.

Hope this solved the problem,

Elle

Hello Elle,

The old keyboard did the trick. I've now re-installed my PC. Now trying to find out how to make my computer more secure than it was before. One of the things I did was buy Mallwarebytes Anti-mallware, since this helped me get rid of the Security Suite virus. Active guard already stopped a few IP's that were "knocking om my door".

Thanks for all the help. clapping.gif clapping.gif thumbup.gif thumbup2.gif
