Set your computer up behind a NAT router and a firewall (other than MS windows firewall) and you should be fine.
Make sure all of you antivirus and antispyware is installed and up to date.

AVG Free Edition Antivirus(I personally use)
Avast Home Edition Antivirus Freeware

Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta
AdAware SE Personal Edition
Ewido Security Suite - 14 day trial

Sygate 5.4
Zone Alarm
