I have tried almost everything I can think of, yet WinFixer persists. I am a Zone Alarm Pro subscriber. I also have Anon-Antispyware license. I have tried Nortons AV software. I have tried Xoftspy. I have used Kill the Messenger to disable the Windows Messenger and diabled my netBIOS as per ZOne ALarm tech support. So, I am trying HJT as well as WinPfind.

Here is my HJT log:

The only reason I am posting the WinPfind log is because the download page for it here at this site said for me to post it with my reply for help.

Please help me, this is insane. It shouldn't have been able to get on my machine and yet here it is.

Thank you,

madmonk

Download this tool and save it to your desktop. Then double click the tool and follow the instructions.

http://secured2k.home.comcast.net/tools/VirtumundoBeGone.exe

When its done, reboot and post the log that is created on your desktop called VBG.TXT along with a new hijackthis log.

Print out these instructions and then close all windows including Internet Explorer.

Then I want you to fix some of those entries. Please do the following:

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then click the Fix button:

O23 - Service: X10 Device Network Service (x10nets) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\ATIMUL~1\RemCtrl\x10nets.exe (file missing)

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

C:\PROGRA~1\ATIMUL~1\RemCtrl\x10nets.exe

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new log.

Grinler,

I did as you said. As you mentioned, the file C:\PROGRA~1\ATIMUL~1\RemCtrl\x10nets.exe was not present to be deleted; or, at least, I couldn't find it. Here is the new log from HJT.

Uninstall Anonymizer Spywarekiller from Add/Remove programs.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {702EA91C-1ACF-4772-8078-18F2B2EE1031} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ANONYMIZER_SPYWAREKILLER] C:\Program Files\Anonymizer\Anti-Spyware\AnonAntiSpyware.exe /BOOT

C:\Program Files\Anonymizer\Anti-Spyware\

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode.

Please download and install the program Registry Lite from here:

http://www.resplendence.com/reglite

Once it is installed, please double click on the icon that should now be on your desktop. If an icon is not there, then check under programs portion of the Start Menu.

Once it is opened, copy and paste the below line, into the address field of Registrar Lite.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\

And press enter. You will now be presented with new information in the bottom right and left sections and on the right section.

Right click on x10nets and delete it.

Reboot and post a last log.

One further question, is ANon-AntiSpyware malware? I thought it was a legit piece of software. I purchased it through ZoneLabs... Should I not reinstall it then?

Thank you for all you help thus far. I will certainly donate something as soon as possible.

You can reinstall it, but I am going to tell you about some better alternatives in my opinion, and too many of the same type of software running on a machine can bog you down.

Now that your clean:

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

or

Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Next,

This process will clean out your Temp files and your Temporary Internet Files. Please do both steps:

Step 1:Delete Temp Files
To clean out your temp files, click on Start and then run, and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This should open up the temp directory that your machine uses. Please delete all files that are found there. If you get an error when deleting a file, skip that file and delete all the others. If you had trouble deleting a file, reboot into Safe Mode and follow this step again. You should now be able to delete all the files.

Step 2: Delete Temporary Internet Files
Now I want you to open up Internet Explorer, and click on the Tools menu and then Internet Options. At the General tab, which should be the first tab you are currently on, click on the Delete Files button and put a checkmark in Delete offline content. Then press the OK button. This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes. When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Finally, and definitely the MOST IMPORTANT step, click on the following tutorial and follow each step listed there:

Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet

Glad I was able to help and if there any other problems related to your computer please feel free to post them in the appropriate forum. Though we help people with spyware and viruses here at BC, we also help people with other computer problems! Do not forget to tell your friends about us!

Thank you again for your help.

I have one last question. Your tutorial made mention of a site that lists rogue software. One of these mentions a spyware called about:blank. This made me think of something someone had said about about:blank being the sign of spyware. Is this true?

Thanks

It is true in certain situations, but seeing just that does not necessarily mean that you have that particular spyware.
