Lately , I have suffered from some problems in browsing certain websites such as Google which can't be opened at all . I could get rid of the problem by checking my Network settings after I found that a certain DNS number was posted inside the space of the DNS protocol . It appeared that a Trojan file was the cause of the problem when I downloaded a misleading file from a a website about three days ago . Although I have removed it using Avira , I still think that it has changed some settings in my system , so , I have downloaded HighJackThis , and I ran the scan to check the log file so that I can figure out what settings have been affected . Since I'm not an expert in this field , I have come here looking for some help checking my log file , and I would really appreciate the help from anyone . Here's the log file :

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Thank you for your reply and help . During the past week , I looked for a solution to get rid of the Trojan's files , and I passed by a website which recommended downloading an antivirus called ' Hitman Pro " which can easily detect the Trojan's files and delete them quickly . I did that , and the result was positive , it could detect the files and deleted them , but I'm still thinking about checking the system again to make sure that there's no any trace of the Trojan anymore , so I'm going to follow the steps that you are going to give me . First , Here's my DDS log :

I also have attached another log that resulted from the DDS scanning in zip file . It's called " Attach.txt " . I did all the steps that are required to perform the anti-rootkit scanner using GMER , and I have attached the text file to the post in a zip file .

Waiting for a reply , and again , thank you so much .

Hello Victim,
  • Welcome to Bleeping Computer.
  • My name is fireman4it and I will be helping you with your Malware problem.

Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:
  • Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools.
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing.
  • Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean".
  • Finally, please reply using the button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply, unless they do not fit into the post.

1.
Uninstalling A Program Through "add/remove"

Click "start" on the taskbar and then click on the "Control Panel" icon.
Please doubleclick the "Add or Remove Programs" icon
A list of programs installed will be "populated" this may take a bit of time.
If they exist, uninstall the following by clicking on the following entries and selecting "remove":

Hotspot Shield 1.49

Additional instructions can be found here if needed.

2.
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (v1.44) and save it to your desktop.MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Guide.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

3.
I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
  5. Click the button.
  6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  7. Check
  8. Push the Start button.
  9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  10. When the scan completes, push
  11. Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  12. Push the button.
  13. Push
Note for Vista Users: Eset is compatible but Internet Explorer must be run as Administrator. To do this, right-click on the IE icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select "Run as Administrator" from the context menu.)

You can refer to this short video by: neomage
**Note**
To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan.

Things to include in your next reply::
MBAM log
Eset log
A new DDS log
Don't need an Attach.txt this time.
How is your machine running now?

Hello, CDTOE.
Congratulations! You now appear clean! specool.gif

Are things running okay? Do you have any more questions?

System Still Slow?
You may wish to try StartupLite. Simply download this tool to your desktop and run it. It will explain any optional auto-start programs on your system, and offer the option to stop these programs from starting at startup. This will result in fewer programs running when you boot your system, and should improve preformance.
If that does not work, you can try the steps mentioned in Slow Computer/browser? Check Here First; It May Not Be Malware.

We Need to Clean Up Our Mess
  • Download OTC by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click icon to start the program. If you are using Vista, please right-click and choose run as administrator
  • Then Click the big button.
  • You will get a prompt saying "Being Cleanup Process". Please select Yes.
  • Restart your computer when prompted.

Reset System Restore
Now you should Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
  • Click "OK".
  • Click the "More Options" Tab.
  • Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

Recommendations
Below are some recommendations to lower your chances of (re)infection.
  1. Install and maintain an outbound firewall
  2. Install Spyware Blaster and update it regularly
If you wish, the commercial version provides automatic updating.
  3. Install the MVPs hosts file, and update it regularly
You can use the HostMan host file manager to do this automaticly if you wish.
For more information on the hosts file, and what it can do for you, you can view the Tutorial on the Hosts file
  4. Install an Anti-Spyware program, and update it regularly
Malware Byte's Anti Malware is an excellent Anti-Spyware scanner. It's scan times are usually under ten minutes, and has excellent detection and removal rates.
SUPERAntiSpyware is another good scanner with high detection and removal rates.
Both programs are free for non commercial home use but provide a resident and do not nag if you purchase the paid versions.
  5. Keep Windows (and your other Microsoft software) up to date!
I cannot stress how important this is enough. Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holes will allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.

If you are using Windows XP or earlier
Visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!!

If you are using Windows Vista
    1. Click the "Start Menu" (or Windows Orb)
    2. Click "All Programs"
    3. Click "Windows Update"
    4. On the left, choose "Change Settings"
    5. Ensure that the checkbox "Use Microsoft Update" at the bottom of the window is checked.
    6. Press OK and accept the UAC prompt.
Note: You shouldn't need to check this checkbox every single time you update, only the first time.
    7. Click "Check for Updates" in the upper left corner.
    8. Follow the instructions to install the latest updates.
    9. Reboot and repeat the "Check for Updates" until there are no more critical updates to install
  6. Keep your other software up to date as well
Software does not need to be made by Microsoft to be insecure. You can use the Secunia Online Software occasionally to help you check for out of date software on your machine.
  7. Stay up to date!
The MOST IMPORTANT part of any security setup is keeping the software up to date. Malware writers release new variants every single day. If your software updates don't keep up, then the malware will always be one step ahead. Not a good thing sad.gif.

fireman4it , I'm sorry for stealing your time and effort . I wish I can do something in return . The only thing that was annoying me when these Trojans infected my computer is a slow internet connection , and as I said in a previous post that i could get rid of them using an antivirus called ' Hitman Pro " , but I requested help to make sure that my computer is totally free from them . You and Shannon2012 have given me help that I wanted , and I am totally grateful for you both . Anyway , I still have couple of questions regarding your recommendations .

I have Avira Antivirus security suit . It comes equipped with a well-running firewall , so I according to my understanding , you prefer " Outband " firewall over Avira's firewall , am I correct ? if so , I would quickly turn off Avira's firewall after installing " Outband " firewall . The another question , as I said that I have Avira Antivirus which also comes equipped with the enough tools to be anti-spyware , but I see that you have suggested a couple of anti-spyware programs , but according to my knowledge , installing more than one anti-virus/anti-spyware will result in a confliction between them which will cause problems in the opertaing system . Am I correct ? if so , which one of these anti-spyware programs do you mostly recommend to install as a replacement of Avira ?

Regarding the system's updates , the reason that as made me turning the automatic updates off is that my computer don't have enough memory and processing speed to handle the regular and periodical updates that need more memory . I tried turning the updates on once , but it made the system running slower . It's just a temporary solution until I buy a new computer with more power soon .

Finally , I would like to as you about Hotspot Shield . Why did Eset's scan detect the files of the program as a threat to the system ? as I know , it's widely known as a free IP changer that doesn't harm the system . A lot of computer websites are recommending the program , and yet no one has made an alert about it , claiming that it's a scam or it's a spyware . I need this program since a lot of websites that I'm interested in are blocked in the place that I live in , and I wouldn't lie to you if I told you that some European websites get blocked as soon as I translate them into English using Google translation service . If it's really a threat to the system , I would like to ask you to tell me about a non-harmful free IP changer to get around the blocked websites .

Hello,

Let's see about answering your questions as best I can.

Actually Avira firewall is a"Outbound Firewall". When we say outbound firewall we mean a firewall other that the one that is built into Windows.

Having a AntiMalware program running along side Avira won't hurt your machine. I would suggest just keeping Malwarebytes and updating it and running a quick scan once a week.

I would just manually go to the website every Wednesday and downloading any updates.
Hello, your log looks much better now.

Go here to check for & install updates to Microsoft applications.
Note: The update process uses ActiveX, so you will need to use Internet Explorer for it, and allow the ActiveX control that it wants to install.

Please reboot and repeat the update process until there are no more updates to install.

Here are a couple of things to read about Hotspot Shield.

http://www.threatexpert.com/report.aspx?md...9ec23a45f3e7c96
http://www.systemlookup.com/search.php?typ...a3-76a1ae736170

I don't know of any IP changers at all.

Thank you for the answers . I will take your recommendations seriously , and for Hotspot Shield , it seems that the essential problem with it is that it contains on " Trojan.Adclicker " which produces pop-up advertisements while browsing the internet using it . Anyway , I will deal with it in my way . At the end , I would like to thank you for giving me some of your time in order to help . I'm very grateful for your help .
