Problem with Avast 5.0

Hi all,
I downloaded the free 5.0 version of Avast on the 7th. Since I installed it I haven't been able to get any updates whether I set it to manual or leave in on automatic. I also have to disable the incoming e-mail scan in order to receive my mail. I have reinstalled the program with the same results. Does anyone have any information regarding these problems.

If I can't resolve these I will delete it and install another free anti virus. I'm interested in any suggestions in regard to a good free anti virus.

I haven't heard of this problem before...

I'd always go with Microsoft Security Essentials, many professionals suggest it, and I use it myself. If you want a firewall too, I suggest Comodo.

You can only use MSE if you have a legit copy of Windows.

Is your older version or different AV fully removed?

Did you register? If not do so.

If you did register, open Avast, go to Settings > Updates and try these settings:
  • No Proxy
  • Permanent Connection to the Internet
Then try doing a manual update.

I have reinstalled the program with the same results

Sometimes avast! does not fully uninstall when using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and you need to download and use the avast! Uninstall Utility (aswClear5.exe) for complete uninstallation. Be sure to print out and follow the instructions provided on that same page.

If the settings above do not help, then try using the Uninstall Utility, then reinstall.

I will use the utility to completely uninstall Avast and try again. I have my fingers crossed.

No joy. I tried the settings suggested, but it didn't make any difference. I used the application to uninstall Avast and reinstalled it, still couldn't make the connection. Tried suggested settings again, still no joy.

It's my B-day. I'm going to turn off the computer and go enjoy myself! Tomorrow I'll probably uninstall Avast and go back to AVG.

Have you checked avast Technical Support? <- on that page, click the link for 'Continue to Support Center', then register and submit a Ticket.

Thank you quietman7, I will do as you have suggested. With a dial-up connection I'm really not looking forward to a ten hour download for AVG if I can't get this sorted out.

Well I can suggest Avira free, I had used AVG for a few years until something got passed it and I had an infection of which I had to manually clean because It could not do it, also I noticed it slow the computer down as well. (just my suggestion) :thumbsup:

After a six hour download on my dial-up connection I would like to get the Avast working. I've had AVG and didn't like where the newer versions were going. I don't have any experience with Avira, so I'm reluctant to download it.

I would like to thank all of the help that I've received. After contacting the Avast support I realized that this was not going to get better in a quick manner. After filling out the information that I felt was pertinent I received an e-mail requesting everything from what bug I had to the name of my non-existent first born. I should post the e-mail, it really is rather amusing taken from a person not involved.

I download Avira last night, it updates and is active. This I can live with.

Failure to provide prompt service and support is what chases folks away so its their loss.

Avira would have been my second choice so I'm glad to hear that worked out.

Thank you quietman7, I do appreciate the help. Now that I have a working AV, I can get on with updating everything else that has gone out of date since I went offline over a year ago. I'm doing this on a dialup connection, and I swear this is true, in this rural area I'm the last person on the run of phone lines, and the very last part is monofilament fishing line strung between a pair of tin cans. Average speed is 26.4 kbps.

I'm in the same situation in that I too live in a rural area where there are no plans to bring us high speed Internet connection any time soon. Your average speed is about my high because instead of using fishing line strung between a pair of tin cans, we have popcorn on a string between two paper cups. :thumbsup:

I was able to get one of those USB AirModems but the coverage is limited out where I live and it doesn't always work. It comes in handy when I take my laptop to town or a relative that lives closer to an urban area.

It seems that I spoke too soon. I just had a notice that I needed to update the Avira, and when I attempt this I get the message that an error occurred during the file download. If you suffer from insomnia, then try reading this report.
