Hello,

This is my fist post. I am running AVG Anti virus.

I keep being redirected when trying to complete a search in Google.
This problem occurs with both IE and Mozilla browsers.

I have noticed the redirects often start with "mfeed" or something to that effect. The page then moves to another page.
I was recently redirected to this page: (link below) which said I had viruses, but was obliviously a bad site so I just closed the page and did not click anything.

---------------------------------------------------------------

I have also noticed other elements of my PC running slower and freezing up every now and then.

I have followed the preparation guide:

a) I could run the DDS text OK (attach.txt) file attached,

cool.gif However I had a lot of trouble running the GMER test (ark.txt). It would not save and kept freezing my system over and over.
I managed to save a log with the "Files box unchecked". The log with the "Files" box check did not seem any different - I just could not save it.
ark.txt file attached.

Please let me know what steps I should take next.

Many thanks in advance.
Regards,

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex

  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

Thanks for your help.

When using Google I keep getting redirected to random websites which open up in new browsers. I have noticed the name "mfeed" appears sometimes in the address bar right before the new page opens. I think my PC is infected with some sort of spyware / virus.

This had happed in both IE and Firefox.

I have also noticed my PC running slow at times.

On wed 18/08/2010 the following show up in my AVG Scan. "C:\WINDOWS\system32\csrss.exe (592):\memory_00270000";"Trojan horse Generic18.BLLP";"Object is inaccessible." "C:\WINDOWS\system32\csrss.exe (592)";"Trojan horse Generic18.BLLP";""

I am still having the same problems.
I have not run any other fixed since my first post.

Many Thanks in advance for you help.

Hi,

you have been infected by a nasty rootkit. It is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you decide to clean, then please run ComboFix and post the log in your next reply:

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

If you need help, see this link:

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Myrti,

Thank you for your helpful response.
Considering the damaging nature of this virus I think I may have to reformat as you suggested.

I have in the interim run combo fix to help things in the now.

Can you please advise the name/s and locations of the rootkit virus you found so I can inform the Tech consultant who will be undertaking the reformat.

Please advsie what you see.
Please also advsie if this virus can affect my external backup drive .

Many thanks once again.

Below is the combofix.txt log.

Hi,

the infection blocks logs to be posted correctly. Your OTL log looks seriously manhandled which is a sure indicator for the infection.

Another sign is visible in the gmer report:
QUOTE
File C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\disk.sys suspicious modification
File C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\atapi.sys suspicious modification

Could you please rerun gmer and post a new log for me.

regards myrti
