Hi wonderign if anyone knows where i should turn. Had a computer here for a friend that wanted me to try and clean it up. It started up and I noticed some spyware that I had been told to use combofix on before so I started using that and while it gave that inital "scan time may double if heavily infected" and then it froze on me so I had to hold in the button to turn it off. when the computer restarted I get the bsod 0x 0000000007e. Tried safe mode, last known, tried booting from a bootable cd with bart pe installed, tried xp disk and all gave that same error. tried putting in a known good hard drive and tried booting to that bart pe and same error. The computer is a winXP box not sure at this time how much memory but ran a mem test and passed. The funny part is I can run seatools as it is a maxtor drive and it will pass the short and long test.

What's the O/S?

FWIW: 7E BSODs are fairly common, IMO, and can result from various things. See 7E, left column, at http://www.aumha.org/a/stop.htm.

If you had a malware situation...and then ran ComboFix...I guess that I fail to see why you categorize it as a hardware problem. If you tell us what O/S is involved, I can move it to what might seem the appropriate forum.

Windows XP, I put it in hardware as no matter which hard drive I put in it I continue to get the problem(infected hard drive or known good clean one).

Understood.

System manufacturer and model?

What media were used for the attempted clean install effort on the other hard drive?

System is a dell inspiron 4300
Win XP
515 mb ram (2x256mb)
40 gig maxtor hd

I tried using a dell xp installation disk (from another pc) as well as an xp pro (one from the internet). I never tried an install as I was trying to get into the recovery console but it bsod at the screen that shows the winxp logo.
I then tried the bart pe disk so I could try some tests but other then running the seatools program I can't even boot of the cd. it gets to the detecting hardware screen (end of it) then bsod.

Hmmm...I'm going to move this to the Am I Infected forum for review there.

If they give you a clean bill of health, that will eliminate one possibility from consideration.
