Computer is running SUPER SLOW

It's killing me. My computer is running super super slow. Everything takes forever to load, windows menu, internet, programs. I can constantly hear the hard drive working, with the light constantly flashing, and never stops. I have windows xp, sp3,, P4, 2.66ghz, 512mb of ram. I don't know much about computers so please be detailed

any help would be greatly appreciated
