Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3

I have been having some issues with the machine for about two weeks. Its one of my colleagues computer. At the time the problems initially began, the machine had AVG Free, Spybot and Adaware 2009 installed. It ended up getting a scareware bogus antivirus scanner saying it was infected, etc. (I didn't record the specific name though i believe it was either Windows Security Center or PC Health Scanner or something like that). I downloaded and ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. It found and removed some problems (again, thought problem was over & didnt record what was removed though i think it was trojan.something). I then ran another malwarebytes scan followed by scans with AVG, Adaware and Spybot. All came back clean and i thought the problem was solved.

A couple of days later, I noticed Firefox would redirect searches and open new tabs. Also Adaware gave a message about blocking svchost.exe from accessing a malicious website (didn't record the address). I used msconfig to stop some startup items and after a little research on the net, used regedit to remove some registry entries for PCHealth. Reboot and reran all the scanners and they all came back clean, but problems persisted.

Then a couple of days later the machine wouldn't boot to windows and had to be started in safe mode. I ran all the scanners again and they all came back clean. I also noticed that System restore was turned off though whether this was due to the infection or the settings on the machine I'm not sure. I installed another scanner called prevx and ran it and it found some trojan problems, which it cleaned. Then I uninstalled all the scanners, installed bitdefender antivirus 2010 and ran that. It only found cookies, which it removed. I then reinstalled malwarebytes and spybot and reran those, which came back clean. Again after some searching on the net, i found a program called Smitfraudfix, though at this point i dont recall if it had found anything specifically.

Another couple of days go by and then on starting Firefox, Wireshark Antivirus pops up. I immediately went to an uninfected computer looked it up and found removal instructions (here i believe). I ran rkill followed by Malwarebytes and it cleaned the wireshark infection. On reboot, the computer loaded to the log in screen without issue, though it did say there were two programs running. When i selected the profile, it loaded the desktop background but not the taskbar nor the icons. I pressed Ctr+Alt+Delete to bring up the task manager and saw a program i didnt recognize (it had the word health in it and i knew it wasn't supposed to be there) so i ended the process. Then the icons and task bar came on for about 1 second and went away for one second and continued to flash like that. I rebooted and again at login screen, it showed one program running. At log in, it loaded the flashing desktop and task manager showed no programs running and i saw no processes i recognized as malicious. Then i decided i couldn't clean this on my own and came here for help.

The computer is currently unplugged from the internet and is booted into safe mode. I ran the programs and produced the logs as directed by the topic preparation guide. I sincerely appreciate your help. Thank you in advance. The DDS Log is below and attach.txt is attached. GMER detected no system modification and ark.txt is blank. When i try to upload it, it says "You did not select a file to upload". Thank you.

Welcome to the BleepingComputer Forums.

Since it has been a few days since you scanned your computer with HijackThis, we will need a new HijackThis log. If you have not already downloaded Random's System Information Tool (RSIT), please download Random's System Information Tool (RSIT) by random/random which includes a HijackThis log and save it to your desktop. If you have RSIT already on your computer, please run it again.
  1. Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  2. Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  3. Please post the contents of log.txt.
Thank you for your patience.

Please see Preparation Guide for use before posting about your potential Malware problem.

If you have already posted this log at another forum or if you decide to seek help at another forum, please let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and taking the time of two volunteer helpers means that someone else may not be helped.

Please post your HijackThis log as a reply to this thread and not as an attachment. I am always leery of opening attachments so I always request that HijackThis logs are to be posted as a reply to the thread. I do not think that you are attaching anything scary but others may do so.

While we are working on your HijackThis log, please:
  1. Reply to this thread; do not start another!
  2. Do not make any changes on your computer during the cleaning process or download/add programs on your computer unless instructed to do so.
  3. Do not run any other tool until instructed to do so!
  4. Let me know if any of the links do not work or if any of the tools do not work.
  5. Tell me about problems or symptoms that occur during the fix.
  6. Do not run any other programs or open any other windows while doing a fix.
  7. Ask any questions that you have regarding the fix(es), the infection(s), the performance of your computer, etc.
Thanks.
