My cousin asked me to help her with her computer problems. Her computer is a Toshiba Satellite, running Windows XP Media Edition, with AOL dial-up internet connection; with Intel Celeron M CPU 420 with 1.6 GHz, and 512 RAM
A week ago it was working fine. Then, for no apparent reason, it became slower than molasses and basically non-functional.
Ran a Malware Bytes scan and discovered a virus that disconnected her Norton Internet Security.
Thought this would fix things, but computer still extremely slow (eg 2-3 minutes to pull up Windows Explorer for a file list).
Assumed more viruses not detected, so did the following scans:
Kaspersky Virus removal tool, VIPRE Rescue, ESET online scanner. Discovered nothing.
During this time, sometimes the computer would work like clockwork; other times, for no apparent reason it would go back to semi-non-functional slowness (note: in Safe Mode it always works fine; no slowdowns). Thought likely problem was now Norton and AOL (perhaps virus had messed with these.)

I then deleted and installed new Norton (she had 3 copies of NIS 2005 plus one of Norton Go Back); deleted a McAffee Scanner (?? must have come with some toolbar or something); deleted AOL and installed new version of AOL, updated IE and JAVA.
At completion, all worked well. Connected to internet via ethernet -- no problems with browser or internet surfing). Then, for no apparent reason, the computer slowed down again (same non-functional speed). After slowdown a Windows update appeared so I installed and hoped that the slowdown was due to downloading. Still uneasy, I decided to run ComboFix to be sure (my bad). The log is below, but my totally inexpert review did not pick up any problems. And, the computer was back to working at regular speed.

At this point, I began to wonder if this was a hardware problem. I ran a Memtest (4 passes) and HD Tune. Both showed no problems. I told my cousin to come pick up her computer. As you guessed, when I turned it on, the computer was back into its non-functional slow mode. I kept hoping this was a Windows update slowdown, but it was not. Then went into safe mode and it worked like clockwork. Turned it on again in normal and it continued to work like clockwork.

OK I am totally stumped, but thinking this is hardware. I await your expert response. Thanks so much for your insight.
What do you think the problem might be and what tests or scans if any should I run?

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:
