Re my elderly's dad's computer (I'm going to visit this weekend and see what I can do to resolve)....Dad says he's checked his separate (dedicated to his computer) phone line...that he has a dial tone, it's properly connected to the computer, etc. He gets the "connected to remote computer" message, then "verifying username and password", followed by "unable to establish connection".

Any suggestions as to where to begin when I visit him and attempt to help? Last time I checked his system, his homepage had been hijacked to "search the net" and I didn't have time to clean that one up. Maybe I should post that question to the malware/virus forum and ask if that could be the problem...or part of it?

Also might want to check to see that he has more than one number set up to call from. Sometimes, the ISP has a bad modem, and if you dial in via a different number, you will get through. Make sure it isn't long distance though

As far as the browser hijack, plenty of info on that in these forums, just use the search forum feature :flowers:

Better safe than sorry. Down load the programs you will need bfore leaving.
AVG Free Edition Antivirus(I personally use)
Avast Home Edition Antivirus Freeware
Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta
Spybot
AdAware SE Personal Edition
Ewido Security Suite - 14 day trial
cCleaner
Sygate 5.4

You can ignore MS antivirus if he is in '95 '98 or ME. These were just in case you may have missed one of the programs. Good luck and have a good time.
