My machine is running Vista 32 SP2. I've been having a problem recently where Windows won't load properly. It only happens once every few restarts/starts, but I fear it may be a sign of a serious problem.

At the point where Windows begins to load and the loader bar is displayed, the screen goes black. No cursor. No nothing. Windows never loads and a manual restart is the only alternative. Also, when this happens the hard drive light flashes, but in a suspiciously regular pattern.

I've seen references to the BSoD, but they usually refer to the login screen being blacked out. This seems different from those accounts as Windows never loads.

Thank you in advance for your help on this.

Hi  to BC!

So it only happens once in a while right? and then the screen goes black during start up. Is there any odd sounds such as beeps or clicks coming from the machine when this happens?

Only once in a while, maybe 1 out of every 8 startups. There are no noises at all when this happens. Just the black screen and flashing Hard Drive light.

Ok, this has not happened since doing the following:

1.) Shutdown the machine.
2.) Unplugged power supply cord for about 30 seconds.
3.) Plugged it back in.
4.) Started up.
