I originally posted this in the XP forum, but was told to try this one instead. Here is a link to the original thread, where I explain what problems I am experiencing:

Below you will find my DDS log. I have attached the other required DDS log as well.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer! welcome.gif

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

I experience severe lag, in particular when I'm using firefox. This occurs occasionally. When it does, it lasts anywhere from 10 minutes to 90 minutes.

When the lag occurs, and I open windows task manager, I see a spike in two particular processes:

svchost.exe and wuauclt.exe. These are through the roof in terms of memory and virtual memory.

I have also been receiving a pop up window from time to time that says "virtual memory is low, windows is creating more, etc, etc".

I have done some research about this, and found some solutions. However, I have not implemented them because I wanted to hear back from someone here first.

Lastly, the GMER report came back blank. It said no changes have been made, or something to that effect.

Hi,

please run scan with OTL and gmer next:

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.

We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:

Hi,

please try running rootkitunhooker too:
Please download Rootkit Unhooker and save it to your Desktop
  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE to run it
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest
  • Click OK
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report
  • Save the report to your Desktop
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

I haven't really seen anything unusual in your logs so far.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

I'm glad that nothing has been found so far. I really think it is a memory issue of some kind. I don't know if certain processes I mentioned previously are stuck in a loop periodically creating a spike in memory/virtual memory, and that is causing my problems. Is that something you can troubleshoot? I mention this in post 3.

Hi,

these are problems that may be caused by malware. Malware is more or less a program that runs on your PC, only it has much less quality control and hence may cause these kind of lags.
However I am unsure this is what we see here. Other software has bugs too that could be causing this. I could even imagine this being caused by hardware.\

Please run this fix:

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following
    CODE
    :otl
SRV - File not found [Disabled | Stopped] -- -- (Cimbrpatatt)
    :files
    C:\Windows\tasks\at*.job
    :commands
    [emptytemp]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, when done it will say "Fix Complete press ok to open the log"
  • Please post that log in your next reply.

Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process.
If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTL\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.
================================Follow up scan=================================
  • Double click on OTL to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open one notepad window. OTL.Txt a This is saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of this file and post it with your next reply.

If this doesn't bring any improvement I would suggest that you post a new topic either in Windows or in hardware. I'm not the best person to troubleshoot this with you.

regards myrti

no improvement. There is still a 30-60 minute lag every day at some juncture. Typically, during this time I receive a "virtual memory" popup. I have researched this issue and found some solutions, but did not want to try anything until we were done with this review in case there were malware issues.

I would still like to have an expert here at bleepingcomputer help me. Which forum would you recommend going to assuming you feel like you have exhausted all options malware wise?

Thanks for all your help. If you have any suggestions, let me know.

Hi,

from the OTL log it seems that you only have 250MB RAM. This is sufficient to run XP, but I can see it easily running out of memory if you run additional programs. Maybe the easiest solution would be to add in some more RAM.

If you are interested in adding more RAM to your PC I would suggest you try opening a topic in Hardware. If you would rather try to streamline your operating system to reduce consumption, I would suggest the Windows XP forum. However streamlining can only do so much, I don't think it will get very fast.
