Hi,
New here, hopefully this is being posted on the right forum.

I'll try to keep it brief. I contracted the AntiVir fake spyware malware on Friday while stupidly following a bit.ly link while looking for a "hotlinking" image. AntiVir crippled everything. Started in Safe Mode and managed to find and remove it with Spyware Doctor. Also ran Malwarebytes, Norman Malware remover, CCleaner and SuperantiSpyware (thought I'd be thorough).

After this, Windows (XP Pro) was pretty much dead. It loaded up, AntiVir appeared to be gone, but no applications would work. I could still open folders, but attempting to run any application resulted in the app beginning to load, then dying completely. Couldn't even open Task Manager, even with the command prompt. We're talking 10-15 minute response times to each click, so more often than not I reached for the off switch and rebooted.

Next up I tried Registry Mechanic, which found over 1000 registry errors, clicked to Fix and rebooted again. Still dead!

Finally, I started MSConfig, and disabled all start up items, and also disabled automatic update, and this appeared to do the trick. XP started okay, and stuff seemed to be working. I've just rebooted though, and now we're back to square 1.

My Hijack log is below, any help would be MUCH appreciated as I've lost days on this already!

Thanks in advance, Craig.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer! welcome.gif

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

Hi,

that is weird. Please try to run a scan with MBRCheck instead:
Please download MBRCheck.exe to your desktop.
  1. Double click to run it
  2. It will prompt you with some text
  3. Left click on title bar (where program name and path is written)
  4. From menu chose Edit -> Select All
  5. Now just click Enter key on keyboard to copy selected text
  6. Now paste that text here for me.

Hi,

the rogue program is still active on your PC, yes?

Please try running ComboFix in normal mode:
Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

If you need help, see this link:

Hi,

the log show no sign of an active infection, what problem are you currently still having?

Please delete the following folder, it is a leftover of the infection:
c:\documents and settings\Craig\Local Settings\Application Data\cqappvwoq

regards myrti

Hi Myrti
I've been running in safe mode up till now - Rootkit Unhooker wouldn't run in SM, but I've now managed to run it in normal mode and the results are below. It says : "!!POSSIBLE ROOTKIT ACTIVITY DETECTED!! =)"

My PC does seem to be running a bit better, but I still have most of my startup programs disabled. I'll try re-enabling these and see how it goes. In the meantime, does the Rootkit Unhooker report show anything??

Thanks!
