Hello and thank you for looking into my problem.

Here's my computer issue:

I run Windows XP Home edition 32 bit on my laptop made by a local computer store "Micro-vision". I have a browser redirect and pop-up problem that surfaced after I was alerted to a problem on one of the websites I oversee (details below). I am not sure whether this is the direct cause of the issues, but it seems likely. Google Chrome, Internet Explorer and Firefox (my main browser) are all affected when I try to access links on Google. The pop ups and redirects are sporadic, but many of the pages contain threats that AVG reports it blocks.

I have tried:

AVG
Malware Bytes Anti Malware
HitmanPro 3.5.6
TDSS Killer
SUPERAnti Spyware
Ad Aware
Spybot Search and Destroy
CCleaner
Microsoft Security Essentials
Cleanup!
ComboFix.exe (I did this on the advice of a friend of mine, but it didn't do a thing)
MGTools.exe
RootRepeal
Disk Check
TrojanRemover

None of these find anything wrong with my computer except Hitman Pro, which blithely mentions that "Possible variant of the TDL3 (alias Alureon) rootkit detected: The device stack of the hard disk is referencing a hidden driver. This could affect the detection of malicious files."
but doesn't clean it or offer advice on how.

I followed the instructions on your Preparation Guide For Use Before Using Malware Removal Tools and Requesting Help, but could not get GMER to run successfully - it crashed my computer even in Safe Mode and I was not able to get a log. I have included the DDS log, which did run successfully.

Thank you for your help!

***********************************************************
About a week ago, I was alerted to a problem on one of the websites I manage by someone who had reported that the Norton site at http://safeweb.norton.com/report/show?url=tirrigh.org was reporting the following:

Threats found: 3

Threat Name: W32.Pilleuz!gen2
Location: hxxp://tirrigh.org/gallery/pics.php?=pic485126-facebook.jpg

Threat Name: Trojan.Gen
Location: hxxp://tirrigh.org/images/gallery.php?=photo04124facebook.jpg

Threat Name: Trojan.Gen
Location: hxxp://tirrigh.org/images/images.php?=pict98239483294.jpg

From following the links the W32.Pilleuz!gen2 worm appears to (among other things) try to infect networked drives and removeable storage.

I deleted the above files and applied for a reassessment by Norton, but not before I stupidly clicked on one of them (I forget which one) and almost immediately after, noticed that my Firefox was redirecting and popups were showing up.

My browsers keep redirecting and popping up ad and malicious websites. My ability to post on forums is also compromised, with "Server has been reset" messages appearing after I attempt to post. My logs are below, chopped up into bite-size chunks that the forum posts will accept.

Hello

When you open notepad please check or uncheck wordwrap, it makes the reports very hard to read

Print out these instructions to use while in the Recovery Console: (This is for XP only)
    1.Restart your computer.
2.Before Windows loads, you will be prompted to choose which Operating System to start.
3.Use the up and down arrow key to select Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
4.You must enter which Windows installation to log onto. Type 1 and press 'Enter'.
5.At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following bolded entries, and press 'Enter'
      fixmbr

After you have restated the computer rerun mbrcheck
  • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
  • It will show a Black screen with some data on it
  • a report called MBRcheck will be on your desktop
  • open this report
  • Right click on the screen and select > Select All
  • Press Control+C
  • now please copy that report to this thread

I've had Combofix running for a half hour and nothing has happened - it still says "Scanning for infected files... this typically doesn't take more than 10 minutes However, scan times for badly infected machines may easily double." Should I run it for an hour or more and see if that does the trick or run it in Safe Mode? I reset the log above so that it's easier to read and I'm wondering if I should continue with the instructions in Post #14 or wait to see if we can get Combofix to run.
