System running extremely slow, hard drive goes very active whenever the system is doing something and it literally takes several minutes to open IE8. I don't know where my wife has been with this computer but it's not a friendly place.

Hi, GaryGranath smile.gif

welcome.gif

Please download and run Rkill by Grinler from any of the following locations (Vista and Win7: to run the application, right click on Rkill and choose Run as an Administrator):
  1. rkill.exe
  2. rkill.com
  3. rkill.scr
  4. rkill.pif

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  2. Close any open browsers.
  3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    -----------------------------------------------------------
    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
      -----------------------------------------------------------
    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
    -----------------------------------------------------------
  4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  5. Install the Recovery Console if prompted.
  6. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  7. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" .
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Note: ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser.
Note: Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security.

Please do not install any new programs or update anything (always allow your antivirus/antispyware to update) unless told to do so while we are fixing your problem. If combofix alerts to a new version and offers to update, please let it. It is essential we always use the latest version.

No request for help throughout private messaging will be attended.

If I have helped you, consider making a donation to help me continue the fight against Malware!

OK. Here's the combofix log. Editing... Hmmm, by the way, I didn't get email notification of your reply. Checking to make sure I've specified notification on.

Please run GMER once again and post its report.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here. Never download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from other sources.

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Seems the rootkit was nuked. I would prefer you update your antivirus program and perform a full scan before you give it a test run. Remnants may be present.

Keep me posted.

The rootkit was on my wife's computer. I'll ask her to evaluate whether it seems to have reverted to its normal performance. Then I'll figure out how to send a donation to you. Looks like I only need to click the Donate link, right?

I have a question to ask. When I first went to bleepingcomputer's "Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs" forum, at the top of the page in big letters was: "Recommended Download - STOPzilla ANTI-SPYWARE - Download Now." Thinking this was part of the procedure for gathering info for a bleepingcomputer expert to use to find my virus, I clicked and purchased STOPzilla for $39.95.

Later, I realized that this was only an advertisement, but it's placement right at the top of the forum misled me to believe that this was part of the bleepingcomputer procedure. If a person looks closely, it does say in small letters: "Ads for Google." I don't know who made the decision to position it where it is - with such a tiny warning, but it's deceptive and anyone who's duped into thinking it's something they need to do for bleepingcomputer will spend $39.95 unnecessarily. Fortunately, I called the provider of STOPzilla, canceled the order, and was told that I had been given a full refund. I have yet to confirm that. The fact that the ad is deceptive makes me wonder.

So my question is: "Who can I contact at bleepingcomputer to let them know that this could hurt their reputation, and who has the authority to change the Web page so this is clearly identified as an advertisement that is not connected in any way to bleepingcomputer's virus-fixing process?"
Thanks, Gary

I will pass the information along.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK..

Since the tools we used to scan the computer, as well as tools to delete files and folders, are no longer needed, they should be removed, as well as the folders created by these tools.

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix.
  • Rename Combofix to Uninstall and click on it. That should remove the application.

Manually remove any tool left.

Create a Restore point:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.
  2. In the System Restore dialog box, click Create a restore point, and then click Next.
  3. Type a description for your restore point, such as "After Cleanup", then click Create.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  1. Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  2. AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  3. Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  4. Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  5. Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
  6. ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Miekiemoes.

Best wishes!

Well! I was premature in saying that the computer is running ok now. It's back to poor performance.

I have no idea why, but the paging file is mega-active even if the system is doing no productive work. I tried defining 0 paging space then respecifying "system-managed" so it would reallocate the file but that didn't help.

The HDD just sits there thrashing, doing nothing useful. Every once in a while it will calm down, but if I start something it goes bzerk. Can this be caused by malware/spyware/virus/etc or am I looking at an entirely different kind of problem, out of your realm?

Perhaps got reinfected.

Run GMER and post its report.

Download OTL to your Desktop
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • OTL should now start. Change the following settings
    • Change Drivers to All
    • Change Standard Registry to All
    • Under File Scans, change File age to 30
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt (first run only). These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please post the contents of these files in your next reply.

All seems clear. The 383.00 Mb Total Physical Memory is relatively low for XP.
  • Please double-click OTL.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the quote below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    SRV - File not found [On_Demand | Stopped] -- C:\WINDOWS\System32\appmgmts.dll -- (AppMgmt)

  • Return to OTL, right click in the "Custom Scans/Fixes" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Run Fix button.
  • The computer will restart
  • A report will be produced and saved in the C:\_OTL\MovedFiles folder. Open that report and post its contents in a reply.
Lets clear the cache:

Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop
  • Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

Any difference?

While I'm working with OTL and TFC, I should mention that the slow system has 512 Mb RAM, not 386 Mb. msinfo32 confirms 512.

If a significant part of my physical memory is unusable some of the time, that might explain the paging hyperactivity I see. Where did your 386 Mb figure come from?

That would definitely may be the problem. From time to time, Right click on My Computer and select properties. Wait until the information is loaded and check the amount of RAM. It should be close to 512, less a small amount the system uses for video.

Now, it is possible the issue happens when programs are ran and not in an idle situation. Perhaps you should run a memory test. I am not familiar with these applications, but I am sure someone may be able to help you in the XP Forum.

There seems you have a clean bill of health as far as Malware is concern. Go ahead and open a new topic in the XP forum and have that memory check. If it take too long, throw me a link to the topic and I will request someone to lend you a hand.

Be safe.

You're right! My Computer|Properties indicates that I have 384Mb available. Task Manager indicates that page file usage is in the neighborhood of 700 MB. And there's a SYSTEM svchost.exe process that intermittently uses some 150MB of memory - while the system is idle!

Does this still seem to suggest something unwanted (malware, etc.) messing around with the system? If memory management was having a problem, I wouldn't think a system process would be using that much RAM. And page file usage is going up and down like a bucking horse - while the system is idle! Is malware capable of doing this sort of thing? Where should we go from here?
