I just got my friends laptop yesterday because she got a BSOD and wants me to fix it. I can't get anywhere, it won't boot in any mode. Any help is greatly appreciated. i tried booting from the XP_RE_CON.iso and went to boot options so it would boot from the CD and it gave me a different blue screen. stop:0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xF748E0BF, 0xF78DA208, 0xF78D9F08) pci.sys - Address F748E0BF base at F7487000, DateStamp 3b7d855c

what other information can i post that will help assess the issue?

thanks so much!

She doesn't remember. She told me shes not very good with computers, didn't know how long her virus protection had been expired, and it probably hadn't been updated. So I honestly don't have much to go off of. I'm sorry.

It attempts to boot from the XPRECON.iso and it gets to where it says Setup in starting Windows or whatever and then i get that BSOD. so... i have no idea where to go from here or how to get this laptop to boot!

That may signify a hardware issue such as a bad hard drive or a dying motherboard.

Can you perform the following:

How to Test your RAM

Guide Overview

The purpose of this guide is to teach you how to check whether your system's RAM (Ramdom Access Memory) is working properly. Bad RAM can lead to a whole host of problems, often which do not appear to have a single cause -- appearing as systemwide glitches, blue screens, and other system trouble. MemTest86+ provides a very good detection mechanism for failed RAM, and is about as good a test you get short of actually replacing the module itself.

Tools Needed
Please perform these steps from a separate, working, machine.Perform these steps on the problem machine.
  • Put your CD in the drive and configure your machine to boot to the CD. This is different on all machines, but it's usually by pressing F12 or F10 as your system boots, and selecting either "CDROM" or your cdrom drive. If you are unable to force a CDRom boot, reply with the make and model of your machine and I should be able to get you exact instructions.
  • If you've done it correctly, MemTest86+ will start to run automaticly, as shown below:
    Posted Image
  • If you want to be reasonably your RAM is OK, then allow MemTest to run until you see this message:
    Posted Image

On the other hand, if you want to be completely sure your RAM is OK, allow MemTest to run overnight. Memtest will run forever until power is pulled on the machine.
  • Check the MemTest screen for any reported errors. Errors will appear as RED warnings at the bottom of the screen, similar to the following screenshot:
    Posted Image
  • Hard-Reset the machine, removing the MemTest disk in the process.
If you didn't get an error screen, Congratulations!

The XP Recovery Console disc might just be bluescreening because it lacks the proper HDD drivers. It wouldn't do a whole lot of good even if it did boot.

Grab the appropriate copy of the Vista Recovery Environment: http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vist...-disc-download/

Tutorial: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/command-prompt-in-windows-recovery-environment/

Burn a copy and see if it boots up. If it does, try the "Startup Repair" option a couple times. If that's no good, try to system restore back to a date before the problem happened.

i clicked on the link for the torrent and my program uTorrent tried to open it and it said Error: Access is denied. so i went through my brothers laptop with a different program and then just put it onto a usb then created the .iso cd. now i got to where the white progress bar appeared and it loaded fully and then the typical windows with the green status bar showed up instead of a window and it didnt work. now i have a black screen again with a mouse. what could have gone wrong here? the .iso cd started to boot but couldn't fully and resorted to the black screen

Check the CoA (the sticker with they key on it). If it doesn't specify it's probably 32.

Grab the appropriate copy of the Vista Recovery Environment: http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vist...-disc-download/

Unfortunately this is a very illegal distribution of the Vista recovery environment. For that reason we will not allow its use or discussion about its use here at BC.

From the board rules

No subject matter will be allowed whose purpose is to defeat existing copyright or security measures. If a user persists and/or the activity is obviously illegal the staff reserves the right to remove such content and/or ban the user. This would also mean encouraging the use or continued use of pirated software is not permitted, and subject to the same consequences.

Luckily we have some legal alternative solutions.

Katherine90, can you please try the following steps:

Download http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/unetboot...dows-latest.exe to the desktop of your clean computer
  • Insert your USB drive
  • Press Start > My Computer > right click your USB drive > choose Format > Quick format
  • Double click the unetbootin-xpud-windows-387.exe that you just downloaded
  • Press Run then OK
  • It will install a little bootable OS on your USB
  • After it has completed do not choose to reboot the clean computer simply close the installer
  • Next download http://noahdfear.net/downloads/driver.sh to your USB
  • Remove the USB and insert it in the sick computer
  • Boot the Sick computer
  • Press F12 and choose to boot from the USB
  • Follow the prompts
  • A Welcome to xPUD screen will appear
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • sda1,2...usually corresponds to your HDD
  • sdb1 is likely your USB
  • Click on the folder that represents your USB drive (sdb1 ?)
  • Confirm that you see driver.sh that you downloaded there
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type bash driver.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located on your USB drive named report.txt
  • Remove the USB drive and insert back in your working computer and navigate to report.txt
Copy and paste the report.txt for my review

regards, Elise

It's not the install media, just the RE and from what i understand it's legal to distribute, just like the XP recovery console.

@Katherine90, that doesn't look as if we have an infected driver. Could you tell me how long these problems have been there. With a bit of luck we can attempt System Restore.

@CohenTheBarbarian, the fact that they distribute it as a torrent, says enough. Even if Microsoft would have the WRE free for download (which it doesn't as far as I know), this doesn't mean anybody can just mirror it. That would be in violation of international copyright laws.

The same goes for the XP RC iso. We had quite an extensive discussion at BC regarding legal issues of certain tools and the conclusion was quite clear: its illegal.
Which doesn't mean there are no legal alternatives. For example we have a nice tool that downloads the XP startup disks from Microsofts website and compiles them to a bootable iso.
