On my XPPro SP2 disk there's a file called SetupXP.htm - which shows all the necessary steps to upgrade.

Also, try these links:

My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.

First of all let me welcome you to BC.
To format and install XP Pro all you need to do is insert the cd and boot from the cd. It will prompt you for there. Make sure the BIOS is set to boot the CD first.
As far as programs and drivers. If you have use installed programs in your download folder you may want to save them. The programs and driver that are already install cannot be removed. But you should download, unzip, and burn them to a cd so it won't be and issue when XP prompts you for the drivers during setup.
I hope this is of some help.

I appreciate both of your replies, and thank you for the welcome acklan ;p
My only further query would be:

Do i need the the HOME EDITION cd to format, or can i use my new PROFESSIONAL cd version?

[Remember i currently have the Home Edition version installed]

you only need the xp pro disk. It will offer the option to upgrade or do a clean install. since you have xp home currently installed, and if everything is working ok, i would probably go for the upgrade. This way your files and program installations will be preserved.

However before you install it is always a good idea to backup everything that you wish to preserve.

xp will have drivers most most video cards, monitors, network cards, etc. If you have any exotic video cards, tape drives, some printers, networked hard drives, etc. you will need the specific drivers. Everything should be compatible with xp since you are just going from xp home to xp pro.

If you do a clean install you will need installation disks for your programs. Any programs you have downloaded you should copy to a cd along with your files.

For the hardware drivers for you can go to the manufacturer's web-site and down load the latest xp drivers.

After installing xp pro and rebooting if it finds additional hardware it will prompt you for the drivers and you can point it to the cd you have it on or go on the Internet to find anything you may have missed.

When you start the Windows XP Pro cd it will give you the option to reformat your drive.

As far as updating from XP Home to XP Pro at the MS updat site , you cannot do that. Home and Pro are setup total differnt. Beside how will MS get more money out of you if they just let you upgrade without paying.
Peaches just pop the Pro CD in and boot your computer. Follow the on screen prompts.

Somehow I don't think so. Otherwise why would Pro cost more than Home!
