hello, I'm posting this thread on safe mode at the moment because Windows won't load for some reason. It gets to the Windows Splash screen but then just goes back to the start. Then the 'start windows normally'/'Last good configuration' screen appears. I have tried all these options and have done several system restores(to as much as a month ago), but this hasn't solved the problem. My computer is an Emachines 5230 and is about 6 years old now. No viruses or malware has shown up on my MalwareBytes full scan.

Can anyone suggest any other possible solutions?

Thank you

sorry I'm a bit confused as to how to start this scan.

EDIT: I've typed SFC /scannow into the run window but nothing happens. Does this run in the background?

Thanks

What run window are you referring to? I thought that the system doesn't boot.

The system can start in safe mode with networking. That's where I'm trying to run sfc. Is that possible to run in safe mode? Abauw, I don't think that option is available on that screen.

Thanks for your help

FWIW: If the system boots into safe mode...but won't boot normally...chances are that it's a driver issue of some sort.

There are hardware drivers...Windows drivers...software drivers (e.g., firewall, AV, etc.). And malware has drivers.

While in safe mode...

Download/install BlueScreenView, http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html.

Double-click BlueScreenView.exe file.

When scanning is done, Edit/Select All...then File/Save Selected Items. Save the report as BSOD.txt.

Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content and paste it into your next reply.

I would run the appropriate hard drive diagnostic, available for download from the website of the hard drive manufacturer.

After that...I would run the chkdsk /r command on the system partition...using the XP Recovery Console.

I looked for the hard drive utilities at the Hitachi website, but they said they create a diskette(a floppy disk), but I don't have a floppy drive.

I ran the chdsk /r but this hasn't fixed the problem. From what I've read, thsi would have fixed any bad sectors on the hard drive, so does this mean it's not a hrad drive problem?

Thanks,
Chris

Bad sectors...are only one of various problems that can arise with a hard drive/file system.

Well...I tend to think that it's important to run a diagnostic (long test) on that hard drive...before expending a lot of energy on anything else.

As for 'your problem" and a solution for it...there are an awful lot of reasons why Windows won't load. You have a string of BSODs where your system is calling for help and I don't think anyone can just say..."do this and it will be better" until more effort is expended.

So you are saying to try and run the diagnostic test from the Hitachi site? One thing I read on that site is that the Diagnostic software is bundle with software that can overwrite 'customer data'. I'm concerned about what I may lose if I use this software. Do you think I should definitely find a way to download and run that software?

I appreciate your patience and help louis.

on what website and what utility???
is really only a diskette (floppy disk) that they provide???
please open this...
http://www.hitachigst.com/support/downloads/
and choise what utility that you want to use and download CD Image
after you download it you must burn it to a CD with CD writing software...
