My touch pad will not work, but an external mouse does

Is there a button to the left of the power button on your laptop? If so you might want to try that, on some E Machines that is a track pad lock button apparently.

Some computers have the lock right next to the touchpad as well. If there's no lock, try updating the device drivers.

I would remove the touchpad drivers, using Device Manager, and then reinstall them, rather than just trying an update.

When files turn to garbage, it helps to dump the garbage before trying to correct anything, IMO.

I'd suggest the same thing as hamluis. Uninstall the drivers for the touchpad and reinstall from the appropriate site. Click here and those should be the appropriate drivers.
