thinkpad x41 w/ winxp tab ed sp3

I am getting multiple error messages when I try to access device manager, run chckdisk, etc.
For chckdsk I got " ULIB.dll [UNTFS.dll] Internal Error: Translated boot messages are too long or missing", but for several others I got "Run a Dll as an App has encountered problems and needs to close". Googling didn't get me any answers, but I wondered if a problem running dll's is the basic problem.

When I try to open device manager thru rclick local disk > properties > hardware tab explorer crashes, then I get a message that the dr. watson debugger has crashed.

When I try to open device manage thru run > devmgmt.msc I get the message that "MMC has detected an error in a snap-in". I get the same message when I open computer management, which opens ok but there is no device manager. Isn't device manager in computer management?

So I think I have a problem w/ Run a Dll as an App and a missing mmc console. I just did a reinstall from recovery disks onto a new hdd a few weeks ago and I wasn't using this computer much until my laptop blue screened. I don't know how windows gets so messed up so quickly.

Any ideas on where to start?

Update: problem resolved.

Googled again and found suggestion to run system file checker - sfc /scannow - and it replaced several files per event viewer reports. I'm now able to open device manager and device manager is back in the mmc console. I can open mmc w/out error messages and I ran chkdsk ok.

Files replaced:
mshwusa.dll
ulib.dll
mmcndmgr.dll
devmgr.dll
arp1394.sys
oembios.bin

Don't know why so many files went bad at once. Lenovo toolbox and HD Tune didn't find any problems w/ the hd. I was thinking it might be one problem affecting several dll's but it was multiple bad files apparently.
