Hi, I have been dealing with a search redirect malware issue since Monday July 26th. I have Windows XP Home on a Dell Dimension 4700. I suspect the issue started Sunday July 25th when I ran an exe I shouldn't have. Here is what I have tried so far:

7/26
- Found problem while following search links from Yahoo on Firefox
- Super Antispyware found a few adtracking items and fixed
- Problem remained
- Malwarebytes' Antimalware found ~17 threats and fixed
- Problem remained
- Couldn't download combofix with Firefox. Could with Netscape 7.2.
- Restart caused blue physical memory dump screen. Shutdown and subsequent startup did not.
7/27
- McAfee found nothing
- Spybot S&D found 65 browser entries and fixed
- Restart caused blue physical memory dump screen. Shutdown and subsequent startup did not.
7/28
- http://eset.com/online-scanner found nothing
- Problem remained
- Defogger (rebooted)
- Reboot did not cause a blue screen
- DDS.scr
- GMER running overnight and found crashed this morning 7/29 with blue screen "pfn_list_corrupt" and a physical memory dump. No GMER log attached.
- Tried a system restore. The earliest restore point was on 7/25, the day I suspect the issue started so it may or may not work. Restored to 7/25.
- McAfee complained of real time scanning off even though I didn't touch it. Turned on and again McAfee told me it was off. Updated McAfee.
- Search redirect problem back intermittently
- Reboot caused blue screen dump with reference to drvmcdb.sys << appears to be related with Sonic DLA that sometimes doesn't shut down properly
- Installed Winpatrol

Thanks in advance.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.

  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

Thanks for your response myrti. I had not had any redirect issues or symptoms for a week or so and then yesterday I used winpatrol and found a malware called XA5RJ9EADJ. I found this website and followed the instructions:
------------------------------------------
http://htlogs.com/what-is-xa5rj9eadj-how-t...ove-xa5rj9eadj/
1. Download OTM by OldTimer from here and save to your desktop.
Run OTM, copy, then paste the following text in “Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved” window (under the yellow bar):

:reg
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
“XA5RJ9EADJ”=-

:Commands
[emptytemp]
[Reboot]

Click the red Moveit! button. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

2. Download Malwarebytes Anti-malware. Install, perform a scan and let it remove what it found. Reboot afterwards (important).
------------------------------------------

It found 6 trojan items and removed them. I would still like your assistance to confirm my system is clean. Here are OTL.txt and Extra.txt. Thanks, CVette.

Hi,

please try to run gmer next without the option devices checked.

If that doesn work please run RootkitUnhooker instead:
Please download Rootkit Unhooker and save it to your Desktop
  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE to run it
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest
  • Click OK
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report
  • Save the report to your Desktop
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hi,

it seems Daemon Tools is interefering. Please run defogger, reboot and run a new scan with Rootkit Unhooker:

Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

regards myrti

Hi,

please upload the following file to virustotal:
Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

Please click this link-->Jotti

When the jotti page has finished loading, click the browse button and navigate to the files listed below in bold, then click Submit.

C:\WINDOWS\Iniwea.exe

Please post back the results of the scan in your next post.

If Jotti is busy, try the same at Virustotal: http://www.virustotal.com/

Hi,

please delete the file.

How is the PC doing? You are still getting redirected, right?

Please flush your DNS:
  • click on Start
  • select run
  • enter cmd and hit enter
  • a black window will open.
  • please enter the following text into that window and hit enter:
    ipconfig /flushdns
If you do not have the run-command in your Start menu:
Please right click on your taskbar, select Properties, select the Start Menu tab, click on Customize and tick the Display Run checkbox and click OK.

Let me know if that improves anything.

OK, I have deleted iniwea.exe and did the flushdns.

Actually, I have not had any redirect symptoms since the 8th of August when I posted the quoted text below. I was hoping you could help ensure my system was clean.

Thanks for your response myrti. I had not had any redirect issues or symptoms for a week or so and then yesterday I used winpatrol and found a malware called XA5RJ9EADJ.

I would still like your assistance to confirm my system is clean. Here are OTL.txt and Extra.txt. Thanks, CVette.

Hi,

all your logs are looking clean. We removed a couple of leftovers but nothing is pointing to an active infection, however there are leftovers which may cause redirects and other symptoms, that would need to be adressed.

Just to be safe please run a scan with Eset as well to check for potential leftovers:
  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
  5. Click the button.
  6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  7. Check
  8. Push the Start button.
  9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  10. When the scan completes, push
  11. Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  12. Push the button.
  13. Push
