Hi,

This is driving me crazy!! It started about three weeks ago.

My Vista SP2 laptop boots up and acts fine when the WiFi connection is turned off (switch to disable radio on laptop).

BUT when I boot up with it on, or I turn it on after boot up the PC freezes for between 2 and 4 minutes!! Task manager shows that the CPU usage stays at near 100% during this freeze time. Also the Hard Drive activity is above 75% and many apps are trying to use the Network connection.

When I had MS Security Essentials it seemed to take 40 to70 % of the CPU time during this period. I have now removed it and replaced it with AVS. This is still taking 30 to 50 % during this initial internet start period.

Also both seemed to continue to access all the files on my harddrive for long periods even with Auto scans were disabled.

I've tried all the standard things: Avira, AVS, Malwarebytes runs and CCleaner. Disk Cleans, cache flushes.

Nothing seems to make a major difference.

I have followed the Prep Guide. attached are the requested files.

Thank you in advance.

You people are great giving of yourselves and your knowledge.

Well things have gotten worst!

Eight or more unknown programs access the internet when I start Firefox.

It barrages my network connection and the computer freezes.

After 3 to 4 minutes thing SEEM to quit down and the number of programs accessing the Internet goes down to two or three.

But the PC acts a bit sluggish.

Even mouse clicking gets slow.

Then about every three minutes a barrage of programs again access the Internet and the process starts over again.

The other strange operation is that Firefox address window keep returning to Yahoo browser even when Yahoo is deleted.

Some websites, such as eBay have taken on a strange look and finally McAfee Site advisor suddenly began was taking 45 seconds to show its site evaluation on a resulting google search list.

Please can anyone help!!

DDS.txt is below. ark.txt and attach.txt are attached.

Hey, there's some evidence of processes which shouldn't be running on the PC.

We can remove these with Combofix

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop making sure you rename it comfix.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Comfix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Hi m0le,

I've included the combofix.txt file below and I've re-started my MS Security Essentials realtime protection.

Something has already removed much of this infection. The remains of it showing on Combofix are being removed below:

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the box below into it:

QUOTE
RegNull::
[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2488973047-2308359479-2647972124-1000\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Approved\{F60EE9A0-F85F-C137-2615-FC47BB910ECF}*]

Driver::
LDVGONHT
RBKKM
THAS

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as Comfix.exe (called ComboFix.exe in the below graphic)

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Hi m0le,

Well things didn't go exactly as planned!

I followed your instruction and dragged the text file.

The first thing that happened was that a box opened saying that I didn't have the latest version of ComboFix.

It asked me if I wanted to download the latest version.

I clicked cancel. (Hope I did the right thing?!)

The Combofix started but then a message flashed saying a something could not be run.

I just left it and it finished the scan.

Here is the results.

Thanks so much for your patience and help.

You should have updated Combofix but don't worry we have already cleaned the PC of the main infection now.

Please run ESET's online scanner next.
  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
  5. Click the button.
  6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  7. Leave the top box checked and then check
  8. Push the Start button.
  9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  10. When the scan completes, push
  11. Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  12. Push the button.
  13. Push
NOTE: If no malware is found then no log will be produced. Let me know if this is the case.

Hi m0le,

First, a sincere thank you for your help. I was at my wits end and worked on it for two weeks before you started helping me.

Now this is what happen when I ran ESET.

I left MS Security Esssentals' realtime scanner "ON" and my Firefox browser on the ESAT website while it was scanning.

After scanning 198924 files it reported "Threat found! JS/TrojanDownloader.Pegel.BU trojan

It then stopped on C:\User\owner\appdata\roaming\thunderbird\profiles\v0u1kc23.default\mail...\hold.msf

I waited an hour but ESET was frozen (although its clock keep running).

Pressing stop it said Threat found and cleaned

After that I went to my email (Thunderbird) and found that my recent emails in my inbox were gone! The most recent email left is from March.

OK well here is the one line ESET result.

C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\v0u1kc23.default\Mail\Local Folders\Hold JS/TrojanDownloader.Pegel.BU trojan contained infected files

Shall I run ESET again with different settings?

I will be at my PC all day today.

Thanks again.

The infection started from your email profile so ESET has deleted those emails that applied to that. You don't need to run it again.

How is the PC performing now? Any problems still there?

It is still acting strange at turn on and off.

When turned on the CPU runs at 100% for more than 1 minute. From Task Manager the two biggest users are svchost.exe and the MSMPEng.exe.

After about 3 mins these CPU utilization still is at 50% equally used most by these two.

Then after about 5 mins total CPU is down below 3% svchost (0.03) MsMpEng (0.03)

Then everything works fine.

Every few mins they jump together to 10%.

Turn off is also quite long 4 minutes.

What do you think?

With ESET stopping prematurely do you think I should run it again?

Run ESET again. It might be that we are looking for system problems after that.

I'm using another PC to send this message.

The infected pc is still running ESET for the second time. It has been running for over 2 hours and 20 mintues. The last 20 minutes it has been stopped at

c:\user\owner\appdata\roaming\thunderbird\profiles\v0u1kc23.default\mail...mail\hold.msf

Seems to be the same place it stalled last time.

No threats have been found so far.

What should I do next? Stop the scan? Then what?
