I tried to reinstall my old Canon scanner today (Scangear D464U). I got an XP approved driver and tried to install it. I keep getting an error message:

"c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application."

I've had a similar message come up when another user in my home was working with Creative Writer. Has anyone seen this error before? How can I fix it? Sounds like a serious problem....

I'm running Windows XP build 2600 w/ SP2. Thanks.

Check out this Microsoft webpage. I've used it a couple of times helping friends out with the same problem.

It looks like you may have been told to download the wrong driver. See the link below...

Thanks for the assist on the "autoexec" file. Follow up prob: got into the desperate measures near the bottom of the page, including writing a new "autoexec.nt". Now some of the functionality of my installed apps is limited or disabled. ie. MS Office,SpywareBlaster and a few other programs won't check for updates anymore, and the "restart now" function on my antivirus updater will shut the computer down, not restart. Will I have to re-install some of these progs to get functionality back?
