First of all, I'd like to thank you for providing your expertise and assistance to so many people. Rarely does one see a group of altruistic souls willing to spend their mortal hours in such a selfless manner! Let me put down the butter and explain the symptoms I am experiencing and my recent history with it:

Recently, I received a malware called Defense Center. II followed steps to remove it by downloading Malwarebytes and running a full scan of my system with removal (in safe mode as well). After that, I deleted the folders via cmd, and removed some bits from my registry associated with it, as instructed by several online sources:

hkcr\CLSID\{5E2121EE-0300-11D4-8D3B-444553540000}
hklm\SOFTWARE\Defense Center
hklm\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Defense Center
hklm\SOFTWARE\Paladin Antivirus
hkcu\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run ‚š‚“Defense Center‚š
hklm\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Approved ‚š‚“{5E2121EE-0300-11D4-8D3B-444553540000}‚š

(The Paladin didn't exist, but I removed the rest).

After these steps I haven't seen a trace of Defense Center since.

Unfortunately, a week later I noticed that all my search engine results would lead me to pages full of ads. Hovering over any link, I could see "Florida Traffic" in the description. I do not know if this was related to the Defense Center above.

Here are the symptoms I am experiencing:
1.Florida Traffic Redirects in any search engine link. Google is very slow to load the homepage.
2. Google and Yahoo search bar does not autopopulate with results EDIT: The entirety of the google site seems fake (aside from the encrpyted search page). Gmail is an untrusted site according to firefox. Google images and any of the google help topics simply redirects me to google.com. The "google" illustration does not change as it often does according to the occasion-- it is always the generic logo.
3. Captcha (image verification) images do NOT show up. This is affecting me severely!!!
4. Occassionally, web pages will be slow to load, or the code gets garbled. A Quick reload remedies that.
5. This applies to both Firefox and Chrome. I.E. has never worked for me so I wouldn't know.
6. Computer performance feels a bit slower.
7. Sometimes I get a microsoft Win32 error message.

My computer is running XP SP3 home.

The mess I've made so far:

--Panicked and tried a system restore or two because of Defense Center.
---Removed some things with HitmanPro (something referencing Alureon, I believe). Subsequent scans show no malicious
results.
---Ran SuperAntiSpyware, free edition. It removed some things (including a Rootkit TDSS item). Ran it a couple days later and the items were back.
----Disabled DaemonTools via Defogger
---- Ran rkill
----Ran TDSS Killer, which removed some things.
---- Ran Norman_TDSS_Cleaner.exe
---- Quit and decided to ask you guys for help, since you know what you are doing.

Attached are the logs requested in the help request guide.

Another update:

I can no longer start my computer unless I go into safe mode. When attempting to boot normally, I get a BSOD that notes a STOP code 0x0000007e

Edit: Resolved this by repairing windows XPsp3 via the os CD.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.
  1. Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  2. Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  3. Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  4. Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  5. Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

DeFogger:
Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
    • The application window will appear
    • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
    • Click Yes to continue
    • A 'Finished!' message will appear
    • Click OK
    • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:
Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

Download DDS and save it to your desktop

    Link1
    Link2
    Link3

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.
    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
      • DDS.txt
      • Attach.txt
    • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
    • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
    • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

Scan With RKUnHooker
  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth,. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

MBRCheck

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop

That should be fine. I've downloaded the tools listed above and will run them. Once I get the logs and such, I will find an internet connection and post them here for the next step. Thanks!
