Hello Duke2k

Welcome to BleepingComputer smile.gif
==========================

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan or rootkit.

This type of infection has the capabilities to allows hacker to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identity Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you still want to clean it please do the following

===================
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop.
  • Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.

  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.

  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.

  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.

  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

========

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Please do not pm for help, post it in the forums instead.

If I am helping you and have not responded for 48 hours please send me a pm as I don't always get notifications.

wacko.gif Hi Thanks for your help. Before you replied I managed to run GMER in windows safemode, and I have attached the log. I ran TDSSKiller as requested and have attached the log. Combofix ran as usual and completed 50 stages, but failed to produce a log after stating "Deleting files". The screen goes blank and the PC reboots. When it has restarted a windows error box states that Windows has recovered from a serious error. The report to Microsoft contains the following information. C:\DOCUME~1\HP_Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERa4ca.dir00\Mini073110-02.dmp
C:\DOCUME~1\HP_Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERa4ca.dir00\sysdata.xml
I ran Combofix a second time with the same result. Since running TDSSKiller I can now access windows update.

Please try Combofix once more in Safe Mode.
You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.

Hi I am running combofix in safe mode, but it has so far taken 18 hours to prepare the report, and there is no evidence if hard drive activity. Is this normal?

Hi There doesnt seem to be any log in that directory. Could an active screensaver in safemode cause problems?

Honestly most av's cannot keep up with today's infection no matter how good they claim to be.
I personally use Kaspersky internet security suite and I have not had any problems.
But I do not surf the web very ofter other than to do logs check email etc.. unless needed.

Please open up Notepad and copy all of the items in the code box below.
Change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as fix.reg on your Desktop.

CODE
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]
"ProxyServer"=-
"ProxyOverride"=-

Locate fix.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. When it asks if you want to merge with the registry, click YES.
You can then delete that file after it merges.
============================
=======Cleanup=======
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the Uninstall, it needs to be there.
===============Update Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "(JRE) then click on it
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u21-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
======================Clear out infected System Restore points======================

Then we need to reset your System Restore points.
