Posted 23 October 2005 - 04:21 AM

I don't know what on earth I've done, but in the past 4 - 5 days, my internet connection speed has gone from cable speed, to that of not even dialup, to pages that won't even open (we're talking Ebay here), pages opening at 860 "Bytes" per second, not kilobytes, BYTES! So... I've done everything I can think of, including running Spybot, which shows a TON of registry errors, but most all of them are to games, but no spybots. I've also ran Norton Antivirus, Adaware, and Trojan Hunter, all being up to date, and all showing my system clean. Can anybody help me out here? I've gone so far as to replace my network card, reboot my computer I don't know how many times, my modem, and router, and my router is now out of the mix. Here's my HJT log:

For some additional info on this, the windows Messenger Service has been sending me this msg, a few times now:

Message from SYSTEM to ALERT on 10/23/2005 3:55:09 PM

Windows has encountered an Internal Error
Your windows registry is corrupted.
We recommend a complete system scan.

I'm not sure how this is affecting my slow connection speed, but I'm sure it's whatever has invaded my system.

Hi shostetler,

Download Shoot The Messenger, and run it. This will block the port that is used to spim you. On that same page you can read about spim.

Please move HijackThis to another location, preferably c:\Program Files\HijackThis. Anywhere is fine, other than your Desktop or a Temp folder. If HijackThis is in a temporary folder you run the risk of accidentally deleting the backups or it clutters your desktop with all the backups.
If you use Windows XP it might be that you just double clicked on the file HijackThis.exe, but that only extracts the file to a temporary folder. Please select the file and Extract it to a folder.

How do you make a permanent folder:

Click "My Computer", then "C:\" and then on "Program Files".
In the menu bar, "File"->"New"->"Folder".
That will create a folder named "New Folder", which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis".
Now you have "C:\Program Files\HijackThis". Put your HijackThis.exe there.

O23 - Service: Retrospect Launcher (RetroLauncher) - Dantz Development Corporation - D:\retrorun.exe

What is this program?

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Then close all windows, and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked". Restart your computer and post a new log in this thread.

Check your computer with the following free anti-virus/anti-trojan products.

Housecall Anti Virus Panda Anti Virus Trojan Scan Bit Defender

Post all the logs that you can create with these services.

And, here's the link to McAfee AVERT Stinger and instructions for use.

Be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location, so you can delete it yourself.

Hi shostetler,

Please create a list of programs that can be removed using Add/Remove Programs
Start HiJackThis. Click "Config"->"Misc Tools"->"Open Uninstall Manager" ->"Save List".
Save the log to a convenient location, and copy it into this thread.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

Hi shostetler,

AdAware 6 is obsolete. Download Ad-aware SE.

Spybot and SpywareBlaster are also obsolete. There are newer versions of these and the version you have installed isn't being serviced anymore.

You are using Imesh. This is not technically malware by itself, but it installs malware in order to run properly and it opens the door for every other nasty program you can think of. I strongly recommend that you remove it. Read this article for alternatives that will provide some of the same function without the garbage: http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/ If you opt to remove it, first use "Add/Remove Program" to remove it and any reference to Imesh.
This is another article: http://www.cexx.org/adware.htm

Same goes for Kazaa.

Open "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel. Select the following items:
  • DelFin Media Viewer
  • Enhanced MediaLoads
  • Search Assistant - iWon
and click "Remove" for each of them. If one of the uninstallers wants to download stuff or needs an Internet connection, skip that one and report them to me.

Afterwards post a new log from HijackThis.

Delfin was unable to be deleted because the file did not exist (atleast that's the error I recieved trying to remove it), also Kaaza wouldn't remove as "the specified module couldn't be found". Imesh is gone, as is the Iwon search assistant and the Enhanced media loads.

My internet connection is still subpar, this page downloaded at 6Kb. Cox is supposed to be out in a few hours to try and find a solution to the whole mess, (if it's cable related or modem related anyways).

Here's an updated HJT log after running the new adaware se and spybot.

Stupid Cox.

Well, my Toshiba modem is supposedly outdated as they upgraded their system about a week and a half ago. I bought a new motorola surfboard modem, and things are awesome once again. I do have to thank Flekman though, I found some things on my computer that weren't supposed to be there in this whole mess. You guys here are a life saver. Hopefully things are looking good in my HJT log now..

Hi shostetler,

Delfin was unable to be deleted because the file did not exist (atleast that's the error I recieved trying to remove it), also Kaaza wouldn't remove as "the specified module couldn't be found". Imesh is gone, as is the Iwon search assistant and the Enhanced media loads.

Great.

And once again... great. This log looks clean!

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Sygate Personal Firewall or Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP get updated to SP-2

Please post back if you are still having any problems....
