Hello.

A colleague seem to have downloaded several viruses onto an often-used work laptop. We are a small non-profit and cannot afford to pay someone to remove this. I googled around looking for a solution before coming here, and I seem to have done some things in the wrong order.

She came to me complaining there was a virus. The first problem I noticed was Anti-Malware Doctor or something like that, then another phony spyware finder. Then explorer and firefox windows would shut down with the td-da! sound playing. Other programs wouldn't open, claiming to be infected. I downloaded, updated and ran malwarebytes, spybot search and destroy, superantispyware, cwshredder, tdsskiller, windows defender and stinger. they got rid of a ton of garbage, none of which I noted, sadly. Norton found a few items as well, and deleted or quarantined them.

I figured that would clear it up, yet I continually get notices from Norton about blocked attacks from a few different sources. I also notice that occasionally, in firefox, google searches will redirect to benign-looking stubs and ad pages. They're easy to move away from. The final issue is that despite there being very few programs on this laptop, windows notified me that virtual memory is too low.

Thanks in advance, I really appreciate the help.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.
  1. Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  2. Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  3. Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  4. Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  5. Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

DeFogger:
Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
    • The application window will appear
    • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
    • Click Yes to continue
    • A 'Finished!' message will appear
    • Click OK
    • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:
Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

Greetings

One or more of the identified infections is Known as a Backdoor Trojan. - TDSS rootkit <--please read

What this virus does do.
QUOTE
Functionality
The functionality that the Trojan exhibits implies that it has been designed with profit-making as its primary objective. Making money from the Web typically involves generating Web traffic, installing pay-per-install software and also by generating sales leads for other Web sites and services of a dubious nature. It tries to achieve its objective by employing an array of techniques to try and make the user participate in these income-generating activities.

What the virus can do.
QUOTE
Backdoor.Tidserv is a Trojan horse that uses an advanced rootkit to hide itself. It also displays advertisements, redirects user search results, and opens a back door on the compromised computer.

This "could" allow hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can clean this machine but I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. "If you would like to continue, then follow the steps below, otherwise please let me know"

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

Hi again!

I seem to be having some trouble with the ComboFix. It gets as far as a screen that says
"Scanning for infected files...
This typically doesn't take more than 10 minutes
However, scan times for badly infected machines may easily double"

It stayed up for the full five hours that I had Norton disabled, without changing, before I closed it out and tried again. I;ve tried three times with no success, I deleted, restarted my computer, and redownloaded ComboFix twice, from both mirrors.

I can talk you through what I'm doing, perhaps I'm doing something wrong:
-Download ComboFix to desktop
-Disable Norton altogether for 5 hours. I also uninstalled and deleted every other anti-spyware/malware/etc program I had downloaded in the past few days
-At this point, I disable my wireless card on the laptop, because I get "attack blocked" messages weather an internet browser window is open or not, and my laptop is on a network with several work computers that do have valuable data
-I double click ComboFix to run it
-It opens fine, and backs up the registry, and i do have the Windows Recovery Console installed, so it doesn't offer to download it
-It begins scanning and doesn't do anything else for five hours

That's the longest I've left it, should I leave it longer? Does my wireless internet need to be enabled? I feel like that's dangerous for any amount if time when I know I'm the target of intruders.

Thanks so much for all your help!

Hello. I re-ran this. I am still being redirected. As I mentioned, it is not a constant. I'd say it's about 1/5 of searches. I've installed a script blocker on firefox, so the pages it directs me to no longer attempt to open executable files.

I still get the same notices from norton, about ever 15 minutes, while my internet connection is active.

Just to test, i searched for the word "movie" and e few seconds later, another tab opened on its own:

http://chocolatemoussealaska.com/key/?qs=7...p;t=movie"

Anyway, here is the report.

I'm going on vacation for the week, beginning tomorrow morning, and I'll be back the 9th of August.

Thanks so much for all of your help.

Hello juliamaria

I want you to run combofix in safe mode

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

if combofix needs to restart the computer please reboot into safe mode untill combofix has completed

Hey,

This seems to have done the trick to get combo fix to run! A few moments after it started, it gave me a warned that it had detected rootkit activity and would restart. It restarted (in safe mode) and is now displaying the

"completed stage_1"... screens that are shown on the "how to use combofix" page. It's on stage 23 already!

I will follow the instruction from the combofix tutorial thread and post the log combofix provides. Is there anything else I should post?

Thanks so very much!

-Julia

Oh, and I checked to see if my searches were still being redirected. I searched for "virus" in google, I clicked on the link:

www.virusbtn.com/

it took me to:

http://asianppv.com/result.php?Keywords=vi...8&Submit=Go

which tried to then show me:
http://nnkclwv.com/iAT4IdgP5o4yGnS0151a008...9f4cd4de3a7f27Z

but script blocker didn't allow it.

Don't know if any of this is useful, but just in case.

Thanks so much!

hello

this one is not being nice mad.gif

Please download maxlook, saving the file to your desktop.
Double click maxlook.exe to run it. Note - you must run it only once!

1.Restart your computer.
2.Before Windows loads, you will be prompted to choose which Operating System to start.
3.Use the up and down arrow key to select Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
4.You must enter which Windows installation to log onto. Type 1 and press 'Enter'.
5.At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following bolded entries, and press 'Enter' (note the spaces):
    batch look.bat

You will see 1 file copied many times then return to the x:\windows> prompt.
Type Exit to restart your computer then logon in normal mode.

Click Start >> Run and then type the following in the run box

maxlook -sig

(note the space before the - sign)
It will produce looklog.txt on the desktop and open it.
Please post the results here.

This will not fix anything but will give me info that I need
