If Boopme has looked at it then this PC must need something stronger.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop making sure you rename it comfix.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Comfix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Yes, probably in use. But not necessarily malware.

Let's check out the possibility of a rootkit here.

Please download MBRCheck to your desktop.

1. Double click MBRCheck.exe to run it (Right click and run as Administrator for Vista).
2. It will open a black window, please do not fix anything (if it gives you an option).
3. Exit that window and it will produce a log (MBRCheck_date_time).
4. Please post that log when you reply.

Let's take a look at the safe mode issue. Combofix doesn't need admin rights.

Can you try and run Rkill. Rkill is a small program and doesn't need admin rights so should run on the normal mode.

Download and Run RKill

Please download RKill by Grinler from one of the 4 links below and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
Link 4
  • Before we begin, you should disable your anti-malware softwares you have installed so they do not interfere RKill running as some anti-malware softwares detect RKill as malicious. Please refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double-click on Rkill on your desktop to run it. (If you are using Windows Vista, please right-click on it and select Run As Administrator)
  • A black screen will appear and then disappear. Please do not worry, that is normal. This means that the tool has been successfully executed.
  • Please post the resulting log in your next reply.

After that please run Combofix again but in normal mode.

We need to be sneakier...
  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.

Even stranger is that there's nothing on the logs here either. The crashing in normal mode is not necessarily malware so we should attempt a repair of your system and see if that helps.

You may have corrupt critical system files. Let's see if we can fix that.
  1. Select
  2. Select All Programs
  3. Select Accessories
  4. Right click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator
  • If you have the User Account Control (UAC) enabled you will be asked for authorization prior to the command prompt opening.
  • You may simply need to press the Continue button if you are the administrator or insert the administrator password.
  • Type in sfc /scannow in the command window and press enter.
  • Note the space between the c and the /
  • If any files require replacing SFC will replace them. You may be asked to insert your Vista DVD for this process to continue. This can be done with a borrowed DVD if you don't have one.
  • Be patient because the scan may take some time.
  • Allow the scan to run and when completed, reboot the system.

I'm with boopme here. This is looking increasingly like a corrupt operating system.

As this is not a malware problem I cannot continue with this thread.

Please post on the original thread that the PC is clean (give them then link to this topic) and see what they suggest.

I will keep this topic open for five days, after that you can PM me if you need to.
