I had the helpassistant mbr rootkit trojan back in April. Folks here helped me identify it, and I decided to throw in the towel, wiped my harddrive, and went on with life. Now my son has brought me his ailing computer, and I was dismayed to find all the "helpassistant" symptoms on his computer. There was the helpassistant identity created and all his important files copied to it; the firewall had the services exceptions with the usual numbers that reappear with every restart even though all exceptions have been turned off.

I'd like to try to fight this thing this time, even though my son's laptop is a Dell (Latitude D620), which complicates fixing the mbr. I would appreciate someone helping me know what to do. I have run the tests recommended in the preparation guide and here are the results.

Thanks,
myr

Hello, myrmyd.
My name is aommaster and I will be helping you with your log.

I apologize for the delay in response we get overwhelmed at times but we are trying our best to keep up.
If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, I would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following below so I can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Thanks

Should you still require assistance, please take note of the points below:
  • Please track this topic by either adding it to your favourites or clicking the Options button at the top of this thread and then Track this topic.
  • Please disable word-wrap before posting logs. This can be done by clicking Format and un-ticking the word-wrap feature in notepad.
  • The logs that you post should be copied and pasted directly into the reply. Only attach them if requested or if they do not fit into the post.
  • If you do not reply within 5 days, I will have to close your topic. Should you not be able to meet this, please notify me so that I will leave the topic open.
  • Please do not install, update, or run any programs for the duration of the fix.
  • If you do not understand the instructions I provide, please don't hesitate to ask. That's what I'm here for smile.gif
  • Please continue to reply to this topic until I give you the all clean. Just because there are no symptoms of infection doesn't mean that the computer is clean.
  • If you are running Vista, please run all the fixes as an administrator. This is done by right-clicking the program and clicking "Run as Administrator".

Please do the following so I can take a look at the current state of your system.
We need to run Defogger
  1. Please download DeFogger to your desktop.
  2. Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  3. The application window will appear
  4. Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  5. Click Yes to continue
  6. A 'Finished!' message will appear
  7. Click OK
  8. DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
Note: If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.
Do not re-enable these drivers until the end of the fix.

We need to run RSIT
  1. Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random and save it to your desktop.
  2. Double click on RSIT.exe.
  3. Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  4. Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

NEXT:
We need to run an Anti-Rootkit (ARK) scan
  1. Download GMER and save to your desktop. Note that the file will be randomly named to prevent active malware from stopping the download.
  2. Close all other open programs as there is a slight chance your computer will crash.
  3. Double click the GMER program. Your security programs may detect GMER's driver trying to load. Allow it.
  4. You may see a warning saying "GMER has detected rootkit activity". If so, select NO.
  5. Make sure all options are checked except:
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive, which is typically C:\
    • Show All (This is important, so do not miss it.)
Note: If GMER crashes or hangs, please retry running a scan. Only this time, in addition to the options mentioned above, uncheck Devices as well.
  6. When the scan is complete, click Save and save the log onto your desktop.

If GMER crashes, hangs or blue-screens, do the following
  1. Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  2. Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  3. Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  4. Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth,. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  5. Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  6. Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.
Note:You may get this warning. If so, please ignore it.
"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself! It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

In your next reply, please include the following:
  • Log.txt
  • info.txt
  • gmer.log/RKUnhooker log

Please do not send me PM's requesting for help. The forums are there for a reason : )
If I am helping you and do not respond to your thread for 48 hours, please send me a PM

Thank you for the help, aommaster. I have left the computer off since my first post and waited until someone helped me.

First, I downloaded defogger, followed directions, and ran it. It created a defogger_disable.log but didn't ask to reboot the computer. I did that anyway. Every time I boot this computer, I go in the Windows Firewall and turn off the characteristic remote help and services exceptions that have reappeared -- only two usually with the numbers 65533 and 52344.

Second, I downloaded RSIT.exe and ran that. You also wanted me to download and run GMER, but I had already done that in the first post above and attached the log it created. I didn't repeat the GMER thing, but if you want that redone with your linked program, then I will.

Also, I noticed RSIT was looking for files changed in the last month. In case you need to know this, the helpassistant identity was set up on June 16, 2010, longer than one month ago.

Here are the RSIT logs, log.txt first, then info.txt.
Many thanks,
myr

Hello, myrmyd.
No, that's fine. The info.txt only appears once, because the data within it rarely changes throughout the course of the fix smile.gif

I noticed you had the remnants of poker programs (Full tilt and Pokerstars). It appears that they have been removed and have folders left behind. Would you like me to delete them when we continue with the fix?

Viewpoint Warning!

Your logs show Viewpoint Manager installed, Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This changed from what we know in 2006 read this article:

Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware

I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist:
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player

Backdoor warning!

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would advise you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

It is dangerous and incorrect to assume the computer is secure even if the malware appears to have been removed.
In most cases, a reformat and clean install of the Operating System is the best solution for your (and probably other's) safety. Making this decision is based on what the computer is used for, and what information can be accessed from it. For more information, please read these references very carefully:
When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?
Help: I Got Hacked. Now What Do I Do?
Help: I Got Hacked. Now What Do I Do? Part II
Where to draw the line? When to recommend a format and reinstall?

Again, if you would like me to attempt to clean it, I will be happy to do so. But if you do make that decision, I will do my best to help you clean the computer of any infections, but you must understand that once a machine has been taken over by this type of malware, I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% secure even after disinfection or that the removal will be successful. Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let me know what you decide to do. If you decide to continue with the fix, please proceed with the steps below.

We need to disable TeaTimer
TeaTimer works by preventing ANY changes to the system. It will attempt to undo any fixes we run, because it blocks these fixes from running.

In order to safeguard your system from problems that can be brought on by a half finished fix, we need to disable TeaTimer. We can reenable it when we're done if you like.
  1. Open SpyBot Search and Destroy by going to Start -> All Programs -> Spybot Search and Destroy -> Spybot Search and Destroy.
  2. If prompted with a legal dialog, accept the warning.
  3. ClickMode and then on "Advanced Mode"
  4. You may be presented with a warning dialog. If so, press yes
  5. Click on Tools
  6. Click on Resident
  7. Uncheck the following checkboxes:
    • Resident "SDHelper" (Internet Explorer bad download blocker) active.
    • Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection for over-all system settings) active.
  8. Close/Exit Spybot Search and Destroy

NEXT:

We need to run HAMeb_check
  1. Download HAMeb_check.exe to your desktop
  2. Run HAMeb_check
  3. Post the contents of the resulting log.

In your next reply, please include the following:
  • HAMeb_check log

This is my son's computer, not mine, but feel free to delete the poker stuff you mentioned. Viewpoint Media Player was found and removed as directed.

You posted a "backdoor warning" above. When I was told that "backdoor warning" back in April when it was MY computer with HelpAssistant, I bailed out and had my computer wiped as the warning suggested. I'm going to try this time, with your help, to fight this thing off.

I went into Spybot S&D. I found a check in the "resident SD" box, but there was no check in the TeaTimer box. I did remove the one check.

Here is the HAlog.log

Hello, myrmyd.
Not a problem at all. Looks like that HelpAssistant infection is still active.

We need to run HelpAsst_mebroot_fix
  1. Close out all other open programs and windows.
  2. Double click to run HelpAsst_mebroot_fix and follow any prompts.
  3. If the tool detects an mbr infection, please allow it to run mbr -f and shutdown your computer.
  4. Upon restarting, please wait about 5 minutes, click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.
    helpasst -mbrt
Note: Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt
  5. When it completes, a log will open. Please post the contents of that log.
In the event the tool does not detect an MBR infection and completes do the following:
  1. Click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.
    mbr -f
  2. Click Start>Run and run the mbr -f command a second time.
  3. Now shut down the computer (do not restart, but shut it down), wait a few minutes then start it back up.
Give it about 5 minutes, then click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.
    helpasst -mbrt
Note: Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt
  4. When it completes, a log will open. Please post the contents of that log.
**Important note to Dell users - fixing the mbr may prevent access the the Dell Restore Utility, which allows you to press a key on startup and revert your computer to a factory delivered state. There are a couple of known fixes for said condition, though the methods are somewhat advanced. If you are unwilling to take such a risk, you should not allow the tool to execute mbr -f nor execute the command manually, and you will either need to restore your computer to a factory state or allow your computer to remain having an infected mbr (the latter not recommended).

aommaster,

First, this is a Dell computer, and my assumption is that the fix can't do worse than make me have to have the OS reloaded, which is my other option anyway, so I might as well try the fix if you believe it has a chance of working on a Dell.

Second, I don't see a link to download the HelpAsst_mebroot_fix tool, just the instructions. Please help.

Continuing to send you many thanks for your help.

Hi!

Yes, there is a good chance the infection will be removed. I've cleaned this out a few times, but I have to say, it can be a little stubborn tongue.gif

If you'd like to go ahead with the fix, then I'd be more than happy to help out.

My apologies for not including the download link. You can get the file here:

Hey aommaster!

The computer survived running the fix. It appeared to find the infection and remove it. Then turned off the computer. I waited 5 minutes to reboot, then waited another 5 minutes to do the start>run helpasst -mbrt command. The log appeared, and here it is. BTW, the services exceptions did not reappear in the firewall at this reboot.

As the log shows, the helpassist folder under Documents and Settings is gone, but a folder called "HelpAsst_backup" was created on the C:\ drive. The time shows this was done at the same time I was running the fix file. I hope this is something the fix did, but I saw it and wanted to report it.

thanks,
myr

Hello, myrmyd.
Yes, the program generated the backup folder, just in case something went wrong. We'll have it removed once we're sure you're not infected (although the log looks really good).

We need to download and run ComboFix (by sUBs)
  1. Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results". For more details, please check this thread
  2. Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:
    Link 1
    Link 2
** IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  3. Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  4. As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  5. Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
  6. Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed. Click 'Yes' to continue scanning for malware. Click 'No' to exit
  7. Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  8. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
**A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own.
**This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
**ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

In your next reply, please include the following:
  • ComboFix.txt

Hello, myrmyd.
Looks like we still have a bit to clean up tongue.gif

During this fix, we'll remove the remnants of those poker programs. Also, I noticed that there was a viewpoint folder present so we'll remove that too, since you mentioned uninstalling it. If you haven't uninstalled it, then please remove the following line for the CFScript:
CODE
c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\Viewpoint

(Let me know if you do)

We need to run a Combofix script
  1. Close any open browsers.
  2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it. Do not copy the word "code".
    CODE
    File::

  4. Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe
  5. Now, drag and drop CFScript into ComboFix.exe
  6. When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

In your next reply, please include the following:
  • ComboFix.txt
