Hello and thank you in advance for your help.

Ok, so my girlfriend's computer(which is my old computer) is/was infection with the Win 32 Trojan / variant of it. She doesn't do any scans to her computer(s) so I do it from time to time. I have installed: AVG anti virus and Spybot Search and Destroy which I use for primary defense, I also occasionally run IO bit 360 and A-squared anti virus for some added variety. About ~3 months ago AVG detected an infection of Win 32 Trojan, it quarantined the file and I deleted it. I ran about 10 different scans after that to make sure it was gone (online scans: Norton, panda, trend micro etc..) I figured that was the end of it since nothing else that I used afterwards detected it.

Fast forward to 2 days ago when my girlfriend started complaining that her SimCity 4 deluxe was crashing out immediately after load. I opened the crash dump to find the crash error was a page fault error being caused by ntdll.dll DLL errors always worry me, so I immediately began research via google where I read on a few forums that the cause of that particular error (if your memory was known to be good) was a virus.. and they suggested to scan via www.eset.com/online-scanner which I had never used before (dunno how I ever missed it since I'm fairly paranoid with computer security running a dozen scans). And eset found 5 files to be infected with the Win 32 Trojan / variant of with the source culprit being a program called YahElite (which my girlfriend admitted downloading and installing despite warnings from my previously mentioned installed protection programs which caused me to instantly want to choke her since while I used the computer for 5 years it was never infected... but anyway). Eset then said the files should be deleted which I told it do.

But now, after 2 different programs found Win 32 Trojan and claimed to have resolved it, I am unsure if the computer is clean or still infected. This is where I turn to your assistence, DDS ("Attach") and GMER ("ark") logs provided.

Bump. I know you are all volunteers, I've seen you guys post it many times so I'm not being impatient, just letting you know my issue is not yet resolved and I am still seeking assistance. BTW, not mentioned in my original post, Sim City 4 STILL crashes out with the same error even though the scans now come up "clean", could just be a game issue and not the virus, but it leads me to believe the virus is still around.

EDIT: Please be patient. There are over 480 unanswered topics in this forum at present and the current average wait time to receive help is 6 days. ~BP

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start

    nvstor.sys
    atapi.sys
    IdeChnDr.sys

    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hi,

win32 only means that is a trojan that affects 32bit Windows operating system. It doesn't necessarily mean that it was the same virus you had.

Would you happen to have kept the log from Eset or AVG with the files they fuond?

Please also run a scan with Malwarebytes:

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link
If you have a previous version of MBAM, remove it via Add/Remove Programs and download a fresh copy.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

Hye mryti. You didn't mention how the DDS log looked? I figured that the Win32 ment if only effected 32 bit systems.. the thing that I was curious about was why the virus itself was not really identified.. just Trojan / Variant.

I have the log from ESET (and copying it here) however the logs folder of AVG seems to have been wiped. Also, AVG is constantly asking to reboot for an update.. I'm not sure if the update is just glitching and not applying properly or if AVG has been compromised?

Hi,

your logs are looking clean so far. While the files found by Malwarebytes point towards some adware, that may have been installed with some games, I think the detectoin on YaheLite might be a false positive.

Please upload the file to virustotal:
Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Please click this link-->Jotti

When the jotti page has finished loading, click the browse button and navigate to the files listed below in bold, then click Submit. You will only be able to have one file scanned at a time.

C:\Program Files\YahELite\YahELite.exe

Please post back the results of the scan in your next post.

If Jotti is busy, try the same at Virustotal: http://www.virustotal.com/

Hey myrti, I noted in my first post I had Eset delete the files it said were infected.. so no yahelite.exe to scan sad.gif

Any thoughts on why my AVG is in a constant update/reboot loop? Could a virus be effecting it? (I was sorta leaning towards an update that went bad, and just re-installing it and seeing what happens)

I wanted to add, since the computer has now done this twice in the last 2 days.. the computer is freezing at the motherboard (ASUS) screen on bootup. First time all I did was manually powerdown via long press power button and turn back on and it booted right up. This time happened while my girlfriend was using it and she rebooted and it got stuck, had her try same method and nothing. So I had her hit delete when the screen came up and it went into bios (always a good sign). Quit bios without saving and it rebooted fine again. Any thoughts?

Hi,

sorry I was under the impression that you scanned with Eset in your last reply and that the file had returned. Could you please run anew scan with Eset and let me know if it finds the files again.

If you are still experiencing issues with AVG I would try reinstalling it. The hang you described may (or not) be related to hardware problems. It doesn't really relate to any malware I am aware of.

Hi, no eset has not found the files since the first time I used it.

I figured that no malware would really cause that hanging.. but I figured I would ask. And AVG seems fine now (it updated for real the other day).

Hi,

that sounds great! smile.gif

Before we remove the programs we used, please update your software:
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "JDK 6 Update 21 (JDK or JRE)"
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u21-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Your version of Adobe Reader is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Adobe components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Adobe Reader Version 9.3. and save it to your desktop.
  • Uncheck the "Free McAfee Security plan Plus" option or any other Toolbar you are offered
  • Click the download button at the bottom.
  • If you use Internet Explorer and do not wish to install the ActiveX element, simply click on the click here to download link on the next page.
  • Remove all older version of Adobe Reader: Go to Add/remove and uninstall all versions of Adobe Reader, Acrobat Reader and Adobe Acrobat.
If you are unsure of how to use Add or Remove Programs, the please see this tutorial:How To Remove An Installed Program From Your Computer
  • Then from your desktop double-click on Adobe Reader to install the newest version.
If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the "Adobe Setup - Welcome" window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
  • Once the installation is finished, open Adobe Reader and accept the warranty if prompted.
  • Click on Help and select Check for Updates.
  • A window will open and Adobe will check for Updates. If any updates are found to be available click on Download.
  • Once the update is downloaded you will get a system notification telling you so. Click on the popup to restore the window.
  • In the window that opens click Install.
  • Once the update is done click Close.
Your Adobe Reader is now up to date!
