boopme has forwarded me to your forum

Topic referenced is here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/332515/error-messages-when-browser-openedcannot-access-virus-software-sites/ ~ OB

I cannot access internet sites related to internet security, forums, security software, etc.. Generally a "Runtime Error! Program:c:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Internet Security\SfCtlcom.exe" error box appears When the box is closed and I try to reaccess the same site, I'm told that I'm not connected to the internet and a new browser window appears. The new browser window is IE, it is not a hijack to another site.

I get occasional pop up windows related to programs that I am not running at the time such as:

"Ad-Aware was shut down and generated and error report. Please contact ...."

When trying to run antivirus software on my computer, somtimes it will run, other times it will start running and then the window disappears.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.
  1. Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  2. Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  3. Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  4. Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  5. Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

DeFogger:
Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
    • The application window will appear
    • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
    • Click Yes to continue
    • A 'Finished!' message will appear
    • Click OK
    • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:
Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

Download DDS and save it to your desktop

    Link1
    Link2
    Link3

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.

Greetings

One or more of the identified infections is a Backdoor Trojan. - TDSS rootkit

This could allow hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC could be compromised and there is no way to be sure that your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. "If you would like to continue, then follow the steps below, otherwise please let me know"

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

Completed tasks and started the Combo fix scan but seems to be making no progress.

After 2 plus hours, the cursor is still blinking after the statement

"scan times for badly infected machines may easily double"

Should I close and start over?

Hi Gringo,

I ran TDSSKiller but no threats were found.

FYI, I could not close the combo fix scan window. Taskmanager would not close it either. I tried to shutdown/restart the computer but it would not work. I hard booted the computer.

I still cannot access web sites asssociated with internet security.

It tells me I'm not connected to the internet.

The various runtime error messages did not pop up however and no additional browser windows opened.

Hello

Rename combofix:

Please download Combofix from one of these locations:
    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3

You must rename it before saving it... Rename it: Gringo . See images below. Save it to your desktop.

Please disable any Antivirus and Firewall you have active, as shown in this topic. Please close all open application windows.

Double click on Gringo & follow the prompts.
Do Not use your keyboard or mouse click anywhere in the ComboFix window, as this may cause the program to stall or crash.
Do Not touch your computer when ComboFix is running!
When finished,Notepad will open and ComboxFix will produce a log file.
Please copy/paste the contents of this log in your next reply.

If it still will not run then please try to run it in safe mode

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

Hi Gringo,

I must confess that I went ahead and tried Combofix again yesterday.

It ran completely this time.

Below is the log file.

The computer seems to be running okay now. I am now able to access internet securitysites on the internet.

I have not had any issues so far.

Greetings

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

CODE
Registry::
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\GloballyOpenPorts\List]
"5000:TCP"=-
"5001:TCP"=-
"5002:TCP"=-
"5003:TCP"=-
"5004:TCP"=-
"5005:TCP"=-
"5006:TCP"=-
"5007:TCP"=-
"5008:TCP"=-
"5009:TCP"=-
"5010:TCP"=-
"5011:TCP"=-
"5012:TCP"=-
"5013:TCP"=-
"5014:TCP"=-
"5015:TCP"=-
"5016:TCP"=-
"5017:TCP"=-
"5018:TCP"=-
"5019:TCP"=-
"5020:TCP"=-

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. report from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Gringo

Below is the new combofix log file

No problems with running the program.

Computer is doing okay.

FYI, a Combofix popup window said there was an update and asked if I wanted to download the update. I accepted this. Hopefully this did not affect the script dropped into the icon. The program has asked about the update each time I have run it.
