Posted 21 July 2010 - 08:12 AM

I have previously been infected with AV antivirus and AV security Suite. I used MBAM to get rid of those, at least I thought. I am now infected with something that is resetting my display settings to the lowest possible, and closing any browser windows I may have open at the same time. I am seeing a yellow shield that pops up on the taskbar, with various BS warnings popping up, every time it resizes.I am using Spybot S&D, obviously with little to no effect. I have run a DDS scan, but the gmer scan does not seem to be working. I left it run all night to do the scan, but in the end my computer just freezes, and nothing works, so I haven't been able to produce a log from the scan. This is geting extremely frustrating, any help would be much appreciated.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.
  1. Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  2. Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  3. Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  4. Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  5. Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

    • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:

    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
      • DDS.txt
      • Attach.txt
    • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
    • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
    • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

OK, so in order to do anything without the screen resizing itself, and hearing the "ta-da" sound, i have to run Rkill every time i reboot my machine, in case that would affect anything. It only kills itself, and an MSRSS.exe process, which allows me to work within windows to some extent.

Everything you intructed me to do seemed to go off without a hitch, so hopefully you'll have the information you need.
I'll be checking back tomorrow, and then not until Monday afternoon on any replies. Thanks!

Oh, i think i covered this in the original post, but I am having the googleads browser redirect, and also I keep getting a popup warning about internet explorer(which i never use) having some kind of script error, so I assume it is trying to open itself, and when i do use firefox, i keep getting pop-ups that eventually send me to google.com, though it seems to be some other kind of redirect as well.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

Trouble! I ran combofix, using the method I printed off of this site. I went step by step, installing the recovery console as well, and I seem to be having a big problem. I keep getting a blue error screen at bootup, and windows will not load.

" A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you have seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select advance startup options, and then select safe mode.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x0000007E (0xc0000005, 0xF731F040, 0xF78B4528, 0xF78B4224)

*** iastor.sys - Address F731F040 base at F725B000, DateStamp 46018619

I've tried the F8 thing as well at startup, and nothing good is happening.

Print out these instructions to use while in the Recovery Console: (This is for XP only)
    1.Restart your computer.
2.Before Windows loads, you will be prompted to choose which Operating System to start.
3.Use the up and down arrow key to select Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
4.You must enter which Windows installation to log onto. Type 1 and press 'Enter'.
5.At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following bolded entries, and press 'Enter' (note the spaces):
      cd c:\windows\system32\drivers
      ren iaStor.sys iaStor.old
      copy C:\I386\iaStor.sys C:\Windows\System32\Drivers
      exit
You should see a message '1 file copied'. If you did not see that message, try again and ensure there is a space after the word copy and another space between the file paths.

NOTE**(if you do not see 1 file copied on the screen, even after ensuring the commands are correct, rename the file back to it's original name by typing the following command then hitting Enter.
    ren atapi.old atapi.sys
you should NOT be prompted to overwrite an existing file, but if you are, select No then type exit to restart and notify me of your results)

OK, so the rename aspect of the command seemed to work, but I didn't get all the way through it for some reason. I ran a DIR in the drivers folder, and I see the iastor.old, but not the restored iastor.sys. I've tried a couple of times to just do the copy, --- copy C:\I386\iastor.sys C:\Windows\system32\Drivers exit------

When i try that, I get an error that says the parameter is not valid. Am i doing something dumb?

UPDATE--------

I am back in Windows, apparently your fix worked, I just didn't realize it. Don't have much experience in DOS. Waiting now for the results of what's been done so far.

Okay, so i was able to get in, and I have the log from ComboFix. When I finally got back into windows, the same old fake antivirus warnings came up, and the display kept popping back into the low quality again. The internet redirection appears to have stopped, but I am still getting the warnings about scrip interference in Internet Explorer. I also have the little yellow shield in the corner of my start menu, supposedly downloading updates, though it's been on 29% forever. Here is the ComboFix log.

Ok, last update for right now I promise. I figured it'd be somewhat important to know that I did a little surfing, and out of nowhere I got another blue screen of death. this one is for a physical memory dump. The technical information is: ***Stop: 0x00000007E (oxCoooooo5, 0X85CE1984, 0xF78ECB4, 0xF78EC5B0).

Physical memory dump complete. Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance.

Greetings

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

CODE
File;;
c:\windows\explorerSrv.exe

Folder::
c:\documents and settings\Office\Application Data\h3352uue
c:\documents and settings\Office\Local Settings\Application Data\{EC4E669D-3192-4125-B7C3-6142D47F0A33}
c:\documents and settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Application Data\ikwaqfyhy
c:\documents and settings\Office\Application Data\Caefol

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. report from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Gringo

OK, so here's the latest.BSOD for pci.sys. address F766F9co base at F7661000, datestamp 480252bb. I'm wondering now if I should try just running this drive as a slave on a new computer, the only problem is I have a program I absolutely need, and no longer am able to reinstall.

I cannot boot to windows! I have a Blue Screen of Death that puts a stop on my pci.sys file. I've already hooked it up to another computer, but the programs I need don't really work at all like they should right now. Before i started running combofix and all these other programs it wasn't so bad, but now I can't even boot the system. How am I going to load windows in order to do the rest of what your asking?

Hello

I hope you didn't slave this drive to another computer.

The last set of instructions was to verify if you had this virus on the computer - W32.Ramnit if you go reading about this virus you will find it is a backdoor and it infects all .exe files on the computer the best thing that can be done to this computer is to format the drive and reinstall windows.

One or more of the identified infections is a Backdoor Trojan.

This could allow hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

If you have any questions please ask
