Hi people.
My computer was infected with Defence Center. I cleared it with the excellent instructions posted by Grinier using Malwarebytes, but when I tried to update windows I just get error messages, as if those sites have been blocked. I have tried to use system restore but as it reboots I get the message no changes could be made. I have put the update sites into my trusted sites box but still no joy.

I had some infections last week which would not allow me to update Windows. I used Malwarebytes which cleared the infections and did a scan with ComboFix which solved the problem. But wait for a MOD to help you with it.

You followed the instructions on the removal guide...exactly?

Did you check for a proxy server that was set up by your malware?

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-remo...alware-tutorial. Scroll down to Error 732 section, please for instructions on how to check for proxy.

Hi, yes I printed out and followed the instructions exactly. I have checked for the proxy server and all seems normal. I updated Malwarebytes and did another scan. It found one more threat.:- vendor-TROJAN.BHO Item- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\micr...
I still cannot update windows.

Can you go to the Microsoft website?

I'll move this to the Am I Infected forum.

No, I get a white screen and the following message.-

This web page is not available.

The web page at http://www.microsoft.com/ might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

Any site not related to Microsoft loads fine. Am I still safe to surf?

Thanks.

I'm having this exact windows update problem, running XP Pro. I had infections that I removed with MalwareBytes and got a clean scan, but still cannot get to the windows update page. Cannot find page, check internet settings. I can go to microsoft.com and get to a different page to check for updates, but once there I get an error message that it cannot continue. I'm been fighting this for a week with Spybot, Malwarebytes, and AVG paid version. They find trojans and remove them, I do updates on all three and get clean scans, but can never get the windows updates. This computer hasn't updated since June 9th. I have also checked the proxy server check box and it is not checked. I can get to any other websites.

No. Try not. Do... or do not. There is no try.

I think Defense center has been successfully removed, but I suspect that some damage has been done. I have found that very occasionally when clicking on a Google link, I get a white screen and bad request message. I can usually get round this by copy and pasting.

My biggest concern, however, is not being able to perform system updates.

Fixed it

I downloaded and scanned with hitman pro 3.5, wich identified that I was infected with TDL3 Alureon rootkit, but it couldnt remove it.

I finally got rid of it following these instructions http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-remo...sing-tdsskiller

Thanks guys for your efforts.
