I have this pc where the mouse pointer for some reason does not appear but if the pc is in safe mode it appears and works normally besides the display settings is at minimum since the icons are big I tried to fix it by the control panel-display-settings restarted the pc to save changes and the problem continues.
In control panel-system-device manager, mouse appears in this way:
-mouse
!mouse port compatible with ps/2
What does mean !.
Just a friend took a look of the pc and says the pc has been hijacked because he saw this message
Hijacked internet access by new.net
and it would be necessary to eliminate.
By the way I run spy bot ,ad aware, avast antivirus and cleaned the pc in safe mode without results because the problem continues.
The pc is a pentium II win98Se 128k
Hope you can help
tks

If you see a ! in a yellow triangle in device manager that means windows is having a problem with that device.

If the mouse works fine in safe mode it is probably a corrupted driver - here are some suggestions:
  • Remove the mouse in device manager and reboot normally (with the mouse connected).
  • Run Windows update.
  • Start device manager, select the mouse and click update the driver.
Regarding the possible virus - here are some links to free online Anti-Virus scans.
They do take some time to load and run and in some cases you can only use Internet Explorer, with ActiveX enabled, to access them but they are an excellent support for your existing anti-virus program.

Trend Micro online scan "housecall" - http://housecall.antivirus.com/

Panda Active Scan online - http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/
Internet Explorer only. Requires email address. Requires Active-X components to be installed. Approx 12MB download.

BitDefender online scan - http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php
Internet Explorer only. Must agree to a EULA. Need to allow installation of an Active X component.Some of the options are not clearly explained.

McAfee online scan - http://www.pcpitstop.com/freescan/

Security Advisor (?) - http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx

Trend Micro Housecall - http://uk.trendmicro-europe.com/enterprise...call_launch.php
(European version, supports Netscape, Mozilla, Firefox and Opera)

Tks for your response but here I have some more info about this problem, seems the System.ini has been corrupted because i can see like it:
[DRIVERS]

[BOOT]
*DISPLAYFALLBACK=0
oemfonts.fon=vga850.fon
fixedfon.fon=vga fix.fon
fonts.fon=vgasys.fon

[PASWORD LIST]

[boot description]
aspect=100,72,72

I can't be specific as I don't have a working WIn98 system to checkagainst but there are two utilities which may help:
Under Start> Programs> Accessories> System Tools see System File Checker (SFC) and System Configuration Utility.

SFC will check for corrupted or modified system files but be warned there may be a lot of them if you have not done SFC before. You will need a windows CD or to know where your cab files are on the hard drive. (If it says User.exe needs to be replaced DO NOT restore it without further instructions.)
