I most recent AVG anti-virus scan came back reporting that a file (win/sys32/patched.dx) was infected with a virus. A Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool scan came back saying I was infected with the Alureon.H rootkit virus, and that I would need to manually remove the virus. I'm not knowledgeable enough to do this on my own without causing some damage to my PC, so I would really appreciate some help in dealing with this. I actually have not noticed any issues or any indications that I have an infection, maybe some minor lag or slowdown but that's really it.

I will include my DDS reports, but I must mention that I tried several times to run GMER without any luck. I tried downloading from different locations and also with renamed files, but every time I ran GMER I would get a Blue Screen Crash and reboot. That's the closest thing I've seen to indicate that my PC is infected.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.
  1. Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  2. Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  3. Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  4. Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  5. Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?what problems do you still have?

Gringo

I'm having some trouble running Combofix. Everything is going okay until it gets to the point where it's preparing the log report, when I get a blue-screen crash and reboot. This has happened twice. Should I try running it in safe-mode or take a different approach?

Greetings

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

CODE
Driver::
sgcaazio

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. report from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Gringo

Well, I'm not sure what happened. I ran the script as you had instructed and everything seemed to go fine. My PC then rebooted when Combofix was finished and now will no longer boot into Windows at all. I have tried a normal startup, safe mode with or without networking, and recovery console. As soon as it gets passed the HP logo the screen goes black and the PC stalls. If I hit any key it then reboots and does the same thing. I ran a hard drive test from my bios menu and it said it passed the test. Do you think the rootkit damage has been done and I'm looking at an OS reinstall?

Basically the same thing. I get a black screen with a blinking cursor at the top. After waiting a few minutes if I touch any key on the keyboard I get a beep but nothing else. All I can do is cycle the power and the whole process starts over again. The only thing I haven't done is tried putting the Windows XP disc in to see if that will at least load.

Hello

Here is what I would like you to try.

Burn recovery console cd
  1. Download recovery_console_cd.zip file to your drive and extract it to its own folder (c:\recoverycd for example).
  2. Download floppy disk setup package xp for your operating system (XP ) and save it to the folder you extracted the zip to.
  3. Rename the floppy disk setup package to Bootdisk.exe.
  4. Insert a blank cd into your burner.
  5. Double-click the RecoveryCD.bat file and follow the prompts to burn a cd that will allow you to boot to the recovery console.
Boot into recovery console
  • insert the cd that we made into cd player
  • restart the computer
  • screen will say "Windows set up" just wait
  • at the welcome screen press "R"
  • type 1 to enter c:\windows
  • type in the following and press enter
      disable sgcaazio

Okay. I did everything you asked, and when I typed "disable sgcaazio" it said that registry entry was not found (I'm not sure if that is what was supposed to happen). I took the CD out and rebooted anyway and Windows came back up like nothing had happened. As soon as my desktop appeared the blue Combofix window came up and said that it was preparing the log report. After about 5 minutes I got another blue screen crash and reboot (never generated the log report), but at least my PC seems to be running the way it was after the first time you had me run Combofix.

Maybe it was my fault but I did not run your custom script/Combofix in safe-mode. Should I try again in safe-mode?

It seems stable right now and I can boot into the computer just fine again.

Running Combofix in the normal Windows mode seems like it causes a crash around the time it's generating a log report.

Just wondering if I should try to run your script again in safe mode and see if that works any better.
