I'm on a Toshiba laptop, and sometimes when it's on for an extended period of time I get these weird color patterns on the desktop and the Start menu:

The buttons on the Start menu show up once I mouse over them, but the portions between the buttons are still stuck on the pattern:

The problem is fixed once I restart the computer, but after a while it comes back again. Any ideas on what to do? I've been using this laptop since at least '05 or '06, and it's likely it might be on its last legs too.

It may be video card overheating.
Did you try to clean well all vents, using a can of compressed air?
Which Toshiba model is it?
