I have been having problems with the CPU pegging at 100% for the last couple of days. I have tried malwarebytes, ccleaner, RegCure and Spyhunter but doesn't seem to help. Also, when I tried to run GMER the pc blue screened the first time then when I tried to run again the PC locked up. I really don't want to wip the HD clean and start all over if I don't have too......Please help!!! George

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe

    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Thank you for your response. I am still running very slow. Two processes that seem to take a lot of CPU time is ccSvcHst.exe and iexplore.exe. This has become a recent problem but only when I am running a web broser. I have tried Firefox and Google Chrome, IE7 and they all run slow. Thanks in advance for your help!! Here are the reports from OTL:

Hi,

is iexplore.exe always running or only when you have internet explorer open?

ccSvcHst.exe is part of your anti virus program.

Hi,

you seem to be running Internet Explorer 8, which will produce multiple processes while using it. This is normal and wanted behaviour and no reason to be worried.

I would suggest that you remove all the additional software you installed, namely spyhunter and the registry cleaners and then try to uninstall and reinstall Norton and see if that fixes your problem.

REMOVE NORTON

Please click HERE and follow the instructions to download and run the norton removal tool. Please make sure before doing this that you have the installation media for Norton.

myrti,
thanks again for your help and advice
I removed Spyhunter and removed and reinstalled Norton Internet Security 2010. I wanted to hold off on the registery cleaners since I needed to find the setup disks first. On the first cold boot I still ran into problems with high cpu useage and really bad performance but on the second cold boot things started off running pretty good. I was able to run MS Office items with good performance for example. When I launched IE8 things worked ok for a bit but when I went onto Facebook everything slowed again especially when running zynga games. Sometimes exiting out of IE8 soloves the perfromance issues but most time I have to shut down completely in order to regain any type of performance on any application. Not sure if this makes sense but it seems that when a Java Flash embedded program runs it causes one or more of the process or services to hang? Thanks in advance for your help. George

Hi,

from what you describe the issue does seem to be related to some kind of program corruption. Maybe a reformat really would be the best solution and it surely would speed up your PC and if done correctly also ensure that you are completely malware free.
Let me know what you think of that idea.

If you do not want to reformat, please run a scan with Eset:
I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
  5. Click the button.
  6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  7. Check
  8. Push the Start button.
  9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  10. When the scan completes, push
  11. Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  12. Push the button.
  13. Push

And update your java:
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "JDK 6 Update 20 (JDK or JRE)"
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u20-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Let me know if that improves anything.

myrti, I was really surprised to see Java out dated as I have done a number of upgrades suggested by them over the last several months. I was able to remove and update JAVA. Ran the ESET scan and it did find a trogen (Win32 type) sorry I didn't get the text as I didn't see that option on the screen I was on and when I moved to the next screen it went into repair mode. Performance seems to be doing much better even when running IE8 but it still has the problem when I go to Facebook games...something new that is now showing on Google Chrome is that an error of Shochwave plugin fails. Any other suggestions? I am really trying not to reformat my drive unless absolutely necessary as it will take me a good 24 hrs to rebuild and I know from past experience that my email (Outlook) folder structure is usually a casulity of the reformat. George

Oh one more item...I reran the ESET scan last night and it came up clean.

Hi,

the problem with Java is that installing the latest version a longtime did not uninstall older version. So that even if you update the old version will remain. The latest version of java was only released a couple of days ago so it may not have been updated yet.

Otherwise everything is running fine?

Not totally; I still get a pegged cpu whenever I go onto a site that uses shockwave or flash; a good example is the online facebook game farmville. The loading of the game is very slow and it doesn't take much time at all before the cpu pegs. Once I leave that site the cpu will drop into single digits but only after awhile. Any other suggestions? Hope to hear back once you return. Thanks a lot. George

Hi,

have you tried to reinstall Flash? Do you notice the pegs with all browser or only with a specific one?

I have not reinstalled flash since the trogan was removed. I will do that now and see what happens. It appears that the problem is not broswer specific, they all do the same thing.

Hi,

in your initial logs you seem to have installed both flashplugins for Firefox and Internet Explorer. When did you uninstall them? Let me know if reinstalling helps.
