Hello,

This is a continuation of the thread I started here http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic332516.html

I get a writing to memory error dialog box whenever I close IE8 of FireFox 3.6. This message states: "The instruction at 0x0000000 referenced memory at 0x0000000. The memory could not be written" (The memory addresses are always zeros (with the one "x".)

Occasionally, when one of the browsers is running, a new window will open (without me having clicked on anything) that will open a page advertising something. Also, the aforementioned dialog box will sometimes pop up while using FF or IE. Clicking the "OK" button closes the box and everything seems to be running fine.

This is the family and is used by 5 of us (and who knows how many friends) so there is the chance somebody downloaded a virus or other malware

Yesterday, as instructed, I disabled the CD emulation software, pasted the contents of the DDR.txt file and attached the Attach.txt file.

The GMER program kept hanging. The first time it happened only after running about 10 minutes. I disabled the screen saver and the computer crashed. I rebooted and this time the program was still running after 7+ hours (I could see the changing file names in the lower left hand corner of the screen so I am sure it was still running.) When I tried to minimize the GMER window, the computer crashed. Another reboot and I went to bed, leaving the program running.

This morning, the computer had crashed sometime in the night so I again rebooted and restarted the GMER program. This time it ran for less than an hour and since it didn't crash, I assumed the scan was complete and I saved the scan results.

I have attached 2 Ark.txt files. "Ark01.txt" was created before I started the scan today. I did this because some of the items listed seemed different that previous times when I had started the program so I thought you might find it of use. The other is the file created after the last scan.

NOTE: I am writing/sending this message from my office. I won't have access to my home computer until tonight.

Thank you for your help,
John

Progress (?) update

Last night I could boot the computer, but I couldn't get either IE of FF to run. (Clicked on the shortcuts to run the program, and nothing would happen.) The same occurred when I tried to run an Avast AV update.

I ran an AVG "Emergency" CD I had prepared sometime ago for just such an occasion and it found the following:

1. Intelide.sys Virus identified Win32/PatchedDX
2. Applet.class Trojan Horse Java/downloader.P
3. Trojan Horse Java/downloader.P
4. mailvue.class Virus identified Exploit.Java
5. Skypeqd.class Trojan Horse Java/downloader.W
6. Twitter.class Trojan Horse Java/downloader.V
7. Virus identified Exploit.Java

The problem was that whatever option I chose to deal with each of the above (Delete, Repair, Rename, etc.) I would get a warning that my choice may make Windows "unbootable." Afraid I might do irreparable damage I ended up not taking any action on any of them.

So next I ran an Avast boot scan. It found these:

1. "Applet.class is infected by Java:Agent-AD [TRJ]. I took the "Move to Chest" option.
2. "killit.exe is infected by win32:killapp-w [PUP]. The "Move to Chest" option returned some error (that I didn't write down and don't remember what it was) so I used the option to delete. I guess that worked.

The computer then booted and I could access the Internet but was still getting the aforementioned memory error dialogs and another window to an ad page opened.

I downloaded and ran Hitman Pro (v3.5.6 - Build 107). Here's the scan results:

"Possible variant of the TDL3 (alias Alureon) rootkit detected
the device stack of the hard disk is referencing a hidden driver. This could affect the detection of malicious files."

"Intelide.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS"

The program's log said it had deleted Intelide. Is this the same as #1 detected by the AVG scan?

After another reboot the browsers seem to be functioning normally. I didn't get any memory error dialogs or ad windows.

I am tempted to rerun the AVG Emergency CD again, but as I said above, I don't know what to do when the program finds something.

What's the next step?

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:

  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.
