games that i have been playing suddenly tells me to check a certain port to see if it is opened to be able to play this game. well i dont know how to open a port. could someone obviously smarter than me help please.

You haven't mentioned whether you are using a router. You may have to go into your router to allow the game access, in which case the port there should be available. If you have a firewall on your computer, you should be able to configure the access rule for your game to allow a specific port.
