Hi

Can anyone help please?

I recently loaded XP and before I could install a firewall and antivirus I was attacked. A mate did a few things; he removed the extra links bar that appeared, but when I run AVG it tells me that I have 'Trojan horse downloader.Istbar.GA' and that it can't heal it as it is embedded. It's also in an Archive.

Do I need to get rid of it? Will it reinfect? If so can you tell me how please?

I have run HJT and the log is:

Hi,

The forums are really busy, that explains why logs get behind. We start with the oldest logs first. If you still need some help, please start with posting a new hijackthislog in this thread. Don't start with a new thread.
Then I'll take a look.

Hi Miekiemos

Thanks for replying

I've still got a few things showing up when I run Zone Labs online Spyware Scanner, which I've included below before the HJT log. I get a dialer pop-up every now and then 'GB dialer' I think it calls itself.

I will be really grateful if you can help.

Regards

Dave

Hello,

Yes, your system is still infected though. It shows mainly leftovers in your log, but I'm pretty sure some others are hiding there.

It's better to print out the next instructions or save it in notepad, because you also have to work in safe mode without networking support, so this page wouldn't be available then.
It is also important you don't miss a step and perform everything in the right order!!

* Download and install CCleaner
Do not use it yet.

* Please download ewido:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Let it update, but don't let it scan yet!!

* Reboot into Safe Mode`: ( without networking support !)
°To get into the Safe mode as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key". Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://www.clicktomakeasearch.com/sp2.php
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.clicktomakeasearch.com/sp2.php

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

* Still in safe mode Start Ccleaner
click "Options", click the "Advanced" tab
Uncheck: "Only delete files older than 48 hrs.", click Ok
Click "Cleaner" and click Run Cleaner (bottom right)

* Open Ewido Security Suite
Click on scanner

* Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
* When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
* Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

* Reboot your system back to normal mode.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and the log from ewido so I can take another look.

Hi Miekiemoes

Thanks again - I made a bit of a mess up at first as I logged-on as administrator instead of 'Dave'. I thought it was strange that some of the files you said to fix were not in HJT anymore. I went through the whole process and only when I ran a new HJT to send, and found the missing entries, did I realise. So I carried out the process again and this time found the errant entries. The first time I ran EWIDO it found and cleaned 44 infections. The second time it found none. Does this mean that I am clean?

I have included both EWIDO logs and the latest HJT.

Thanks again

Dave

Yes, and I see a clean hijackthislog as well.

It won't hurt to scan again with an updated Spybot s&d and/or Adaware SE to get rid of some leftovers if still present. No need to post those logs, because I know the scanners could get rid of them.

Just tell me how things are running now.

All running smoothly now thanks Meikeimoes.

I'll run spybot again as you say.

Thanks again

Glad I coud help.

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Most important thing here --- Visit asap http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com to download and install all the updates and security patches!!

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

If you are having XP SP2, read here how to configure Security Features for Internet Explorer:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...xp/iesecxp.mspx

More info on how to prevent malware you can also find here (By Tony Klein)

Happy surfing again!
