Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process. Please also continue to work with me until I give you the all clear. Even if your computer appears to act better, you may still be infected.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.

Once we start working together, please reply back within 3 days or this thread may be closed so we can help others who are waiting.

We need to create an OTL report,
  • Please download OTL from this link.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in:

    netsvcs
    msconfig
    drivers32 /all
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\system32\*.sys /90
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*

    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    /md5start
    eventlog.dll
    scecli.dll
    netlogon.dll
    cngaudit.dll
    sceclt.dll
    ntelogon.dll
    logevent.dll

    IdeChnDr.sys
    viasraid.sys
    AGP440.sys
    vaxscsi.sys
    nvatabus.sys
    viamraid.sys
    nvata.sys

    nvstor32
    ahcix86s.sys
    nvrd32.sys

    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
    CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • Click the Quick Scan button.
  • The scan should take a few minutes.
  • Please copy and paste both logs in your reply.

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new OTL log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

In your reply, please post both OTL logs and the GMER log.

Hi...please follow the instructions in my post above. We do need new scans. Please do not do the GMER scan. Since you are on 64bit system...it will not do much for us. Please also ensure to list any symptoms you notice.

As for symptoms, there is a hijacker on my browser. about 1 in 3 links causes a redirect to google-analytics or some other version, be it gugle or some other misspelling of that. It usually redirects me to the original homepage (Igoogle/acer) but others perform searches and go to sponsored websites.

I did have an infection of AV Suite and restored to an earlier date thinking that would help, but the browser redirects are still happening and I'm hoping there isnt a keylogger or some other harmful thing on here

Hello, Traskin.

Ok, a few more questions to help diagnose this.

Do you have any other computers on the network? Are they also redirected, or only this one?
Do you have a router; or just the cable/DSL modem? (e.g. how many boxes between your computer and the wall for the network connection?)
Is it with Firefox AND Internet Explorer, or only one or the other for the redirects?

Step 1

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

One other computer has the same symptoms, but I was starting with the laptop and was going to list the other after we get this one fixed.

I normally use Firefox, but I just did a quick google search on IE8 and clicked 10 of the search results without a redirect/pop-up.

OK, let's do an experiment first. I'd normally suspect a rootkit, but you're running 64bit Windows. Please plug your computer directly into the modem, bypassing the router. Do you still get redirected? It could be a router virus, or something deeper in Windows. Alternatively...are there computers on the network that AREN'T being redirected?

I realized that I may be misstating what is really happening, so I'm going to be a bit more verbose.

I play bejewelled on facebook....don't judge!!! When I get a score that meets a certain level, the game screen changes (Not sure if its flash or what have you) by getting longer and an option comes up at the top to A) post to facebook or cool.gif Skip. About 50% of the time, when I click skip, the link and top part of the window disappears and returns to the regular dimension game screen. The other 50%, a new browser window opens with an original address of search.google-analytics.com or results.google-analytics.com and kills the original link and goes to a parenting website or Igoogle, or some other site.

If I type in an address on the bar, I get the correct site about 80% of the time and the other 20...Nothing near what I typed.

Now, after over 3 weeks since the original AVSuite pop-up, I'm getting about a 5% can't connect to this website when I try to go to common sites like facebook or yahoo.

I know 2/3 of the computers are having the same problem...the third is in my daughters room and I don't dare go in there...

The laptop you've been diagnosing here is wireless, and the PC that I know is also infected is hardwired.

I will be hooking up directly to the modem a bit later and let you know the results.

You didn't misstate...that was my understanding; but thanks for clarifying!

Let me know if that solves the issue. If hardwire to the modem solves the issue...we need to reset the router and deal with your computer. If it doesn't....we have some detective work to do.

So I've been hardwired to the modem and there have been 5 occasions where the popup/hijack could have happened, but none yet.

Still researching, but looks like you may have found the culprit

Hello, Traskin.
OK, time to reset the router!

Router Reset
  • Please read this: Malware Silently Alters Wireless Router Settings

  • Consult this link to find out what is the default username and password of your router and note down them: Route Passwords

  • Then rest your router to it's factory default settings:

    QUOTE
"If your machine has been infected by one of these Zlob/DNSchanger Trojans, and your router settings have been altered, I would strongly recommend that you reset the router to its default configuration. Usually, this can be done by inserting something tiny like a paper clip end or pencil tip into a small hole labeled "reset" located on the back of the router. Press and hold down the small button inside until the lights on the front of the router blink off and then on again (usually about 10 seconds)"

  • This is the difficult part.
First get to the routers server. To do that type http:\\192.168.1.1 in the address bar and click Enter. You get the log in window.
Fill in the password you have already found and you will get the configuration page.
Configure the router to allow you to connect to your ISP server. In some routers it is done by a setup wizard. But you have to fill in the log in password your ISP has initially given to you.
You can also call your ISP if you don't have your initial password.
Don't forget to change the routers default password and set a strong password. Note down the password and keep it somewhere for future reference.

  • Please make sure of the following settings:
    • Go to start => Control panel => Double-click Network and Sharing Center.
    • In the left window select Manage network Connection.
    • In the right window right-click Local Area connection and select Properties .
    • Internet Protocol Version 6 (IP6v) should be checked. Double-click on it: Make sure of the following settings:
    • The option Obtain an IP address automatically should be checked.
    • The option Obtain DNS server address automatically should be checked.
    • Click OK.
    • Internet Protocol Version 4 (IP4v) should be checked. Double-click on it.[list]
    • The option Obtain an IP address automatically should be checked.
    • The option Obtain DNS server address automatically should be checked.
  • Click OK twice.
  • If you should change any setting reboot the computer.

==========

Please run the following command on both the computers and post the logs.

Go to start > Run copy/paste the following line in the run box and click OK.

cmd /c (ipconfig /all&nslookup mbam-cdn.malwarebytes.org&ping -n 2 mbam-cdn.malwarebytes.org&route print) >log.txt&start log.txt

A command window opens. Wait until a log.txt file opens. Please post the content to your reply.
