Hi,

My computer has no audio output after i booted my laptop a day ago. Nothing's odd except that I have been getting pop-ups at start-up (myoffer.co.uk, cursormania, etc). Not sure if they are related, I then proceeded to reinstall my audio driver. I've tried for a few times and at only 1 attempt I was able to get the sound back. Now here is what interest me, the sound came back and it was playing audio as if it was from a detergent advert, and then the sound went off again abruptly halfway thru the advert. Makes my suspicion grow it really was related to the pop-ups/spyware/malware. But I really could not recall installing anything new on my laptop.

I've attached a hijackthis report and I hope you could find a reason for this

Upon reading other threads just now, I've realised that there are several identical cases to mine. Just to add, I've found out that my wave volume was muted. I'm glad that now I know where to go to get my volume back but I would like to get to the bottom of this, removing whatever that is wrong out of my system. I've realised that start up has been really slow too.

Just had a read around, and realised I have not done my part on the preperation.

I've disabled the CD emulator and the following is my dds report:

============= FINISH: 5:15:15.00 ===============

I've also run the GMER.exe. I must say it's a long and painful process. I had it running for about 2 hours and then my laptop suddenly turned a blue screen and restarted itself. I managed to catch a glimpse of what it was scanning, I believe it was having a go a c:prefetch.... There goes 2.5 hours of my life.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.
  1. Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  2. Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  3. Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  4. Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  5. Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
      • DDS.txt
      • Attach.txt
    • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
    • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop

Greetings

**Note** this nasty that you have picked up adds its code to the Master boot record (MBR) and in order for me to remove the nasty I have to rewrite the MBR with a standard MBR, If your computer came with the installation CD's or restore CD's then this is not a problem and continue with the fix below. If your computer did not come with these discs then it likely has a recovery partition and this is where the problem comes in, by running the fix below you may lose access to this partition. Now you should be able to check the computers documentation or the manufacturer web site and it should tell you how to burn this partition to Cd's to make your own recovery CD's or check this page System Recovery discs, also in a worst case scenario you can order these discs from the computer's manufacturer for a small price.

After you have located, burned or going to order your recovery CD's please continue with the fix below.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run MBRCheck.exe
  • Run MBRCheck.exe
  • Wait until you see the following line: Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
  • Please push the 'Y' key and then press Enter
  • When program ask you Enter your choice: enter 2 and press the Enter key
  • Now the program will ask you "Enter the physical disk number to fix (0-99, -1 to cancel):"
  • Enter 0 and press the Enter key.
  • The program will show Available MBR codes:, followed by a list of operating systems. Please enter 1 for Windows XP, and then press Enter.
  • when asked Do you want to fix the MRB code? type in YES and press enter
  • Restart your PC.

After you restart the PC
  • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
  • It will show a Black screen with some data on it
  • a report called MBRcheck will be on your desktop
  • open this report
  • Right click on the screen and select > Select All
  • Press Control+C
  • now please copy that report to this thread

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. report from MBRcheck
    3. let me know of any problems you may have had
    4. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

Hi,

I've got a disc here which says resource disc, is this a recovery disc?
What should it pertain? I've got in here a heading system CD and a list of drivers and utilities I can install. Does this look like a recovery disc?

Hey,

Thanks for the link. I'll carry on to install the acer power management program. The last time when I formatted my computer, I used a ghost drive from my dealer and I have no idea why he did not have the program installed.

Will keep you posted

Hello

I am not asking you to format the computer - I just want you to have them in because you will lose access to the recovery partition when we run the fix
