Hello.
Recently, my antivirus was disabled (for gaming purposes) and I forgot to put it back up. A couple days back, I started hearing unsual sounds coming form Internet Explorer which I never use. I activated Nod32 and came across a "Mebroot Trojan" found in Win32. I am running Windows 7 (32 bit).

I have scanned my computer with Eset, and here are my results:

And here are my DDS results:

Malware only picks up keygens that I use, which I have deleted just in case they were the Mebroot rootkit files. I have scanned my computer with Nod32 after I preformed both Malware and DDS scans, and Nod32 is still picking up Mebroot.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.
  1. Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  2. Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  3. Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  4. Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  5. Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Greetings

**Note** this nasty that you have picked up adds its code to the Master boot record (MBR) and in order for me to remove the nasty I have to rewrite the MBR with a standard MBR, If your computer came with the installation CD's or restore CD's then this is not a problem and continue with the fix below. If your computer did not come with these discs then it likely has a recovery partition and this is where the problem comes in, by running the fix below you may lose access to this partition. Now you should be able to check the computers documentation or the manufacturer web site and it should tell you how to burn this partition to Cd's to make your own recovery CD's or check this page System Recovery discs, also in a worst case scenario you can order these discs from the computer's manufacturer for a small price.

After you have located, burned or going to order your recovery CD's please continue with the fix below.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run MBRCheck.exe
  • Run MBRCheck.exe
  • Wait until you see the following line: Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
  • Please push the 'Y' key and then press Enter
  • When program ask you Enter your choice: enter 2 and press the Enter key
  • Now the program will ask you "Enter the physical disk number to fix (0-99, -1 to cancel):"
  • Enter 0 and press the Enter key.
  • The program will show Available MBR codes:, followed by a list of operating systems. Please enter 1 for Windows XP, and then press Enter.
  • when asked Do you want to fix the MRB code? type in YES and press enter
  • Restart your PC.

After you restart the PC
  • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
  • It will show a Black screen with some data on it
  • a report called MBRcheck will be on your desktop
  • open this report
  • Right click on the screen and select > Select All
  • Press Control+C
  • now please copy that report to this thread

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. report from MBRcheck
    3. let me know of any problems you may have had
    4. How is the computer doing now?

Okay, I just recently faced some problems.

I booted my computer, and I started a program called Steam. I also started Skype. When I started Skype, my computer completely froze. I rebooted it, and did the same thing twice, and I had the same results. The last time, I rebooted it, and I ONLY started Steam, and it ran fine for about an hour and a half, and it froze again. Does this have to do with the virus?

And I went out and bought some DVDs to burn the disc, but I would like to ask a couple questions before I start the repair.

1) I originally had Windows Vista installed on my computer, and then I upgraded it to Windows 7. If I install the CD, will it go back to Vista?
2) Will anything in my Hard drive get erased? (Docs, games, programs, etc)
3) I bought my computer directly from Dell.ca. They gave me 3 CDs. They are labeled "Drivers and Utilities", "Operating System" (To reinstall Vista) and "Drivers and User Documentation". Is it any of those?
4) You said I may loose access to this partition. Its okay if I do, if I keep the CD I burn forever right?
5) Is there anything else I should know before going through with the steps you have provided? I do not want to lose any information on my computer.

Thank you very much for your patience, and I'm sorry for being so cautious with all of these steps.

do you still have the cd's when you installed windows 7?

this is the cd that you need

I don't have the CD, but it was an iso. image I burned into a disc. I'm going to burn another one now.

And will I lose any information on my computer? Should I back up important files, or will they remain untouched?

I don't understand where the Recovery Disc comes in. I started the scan, and then stopped it because I read the instructions over again and it said I needed to install the Recovery Console first. I burned the Windows 7 CD. Do I start that first, and THEN run Combofix or do I run Combofix and THEN run the installation CD again?

Problems:

My computer is still freezing up. Whenever I try making a call on Skype, it freezes and I have to restart. Whenever I open up iTunes, it freezes. It's okay with certain programs, like Google Chrome and Windows Live Messenger. This never happened before I started scanning with the DDS.
